TAMPA - A lot of Buccaneers were talking about what Chris Simms had to say about Coach Jon Gruden on Tuesday. Gruden wasn’t one of them.
Gruden calmly denied my request to speak on the matter, saying, “No, not today.’‘
No surprise there. Gruden is not mandated to speak after every off-season workout, and with this being a real hot-button topic he probably wants to take some to formulate a response.
While Gruden remained silent, though, others spoke. None expressed any surprise at Simms comments, but most said it was simply a personal matter between Simms and the coach and wasn’t unlike a lot of other situations they’ve encountered in the past.
“Everybody’s entitled to his own opinion,’’ WR Ike Hilliard said when asked about Simms comments. “We’d like everybody to be here, because we’re all teammates and we all love him but we’ll see what happens going forward.’‘
“You just have let it go and go about doing your own job,’’ WR Michael Clayton said. “As players our job is to work hard and do our part. We have to stay away from injuries and let whatever happens happen.’‘
In other Bucs news, there has been a settlement in the Jake Plummer case, and Plummer has come out the loser. A day before he would have gone to a hearing on the matter he agreed to give back half of the $7 million signing bonus he got when he signed his last contract with the Broncos.
That money doesn’t go to the Broncos, though; it goes to the Bucs. They won the rights to it when they traded for Plummer last offseason. The fact that Plummer never played a down for them doesn’t matter. When players voluntarily fail to play out their entire contract, they run the risk of being asked to give back some of the bonus money they received upon signing that contract. That’s what happened with Plummer.
The money the Bucs get in this case will be applied to next year’s salary cap. That may seem like a big deal, but keep in mind that the Bucs had $45 million worth of cap space at the start of the current off-season and have sat on most of it. So what did the Bucs really achieve in all this? Well, they got about $3.5 million for a seventh-round draft pick. That’s not bad. You’ve got to think, though, that they’d much rather have the player. That, though, was never going to happen.

Jim Chump 1 Sb win and 3 south titles in 7 yrs isn’t good? What is the Saint, Falcons, And Panthers records for the last 7 yrs. None of them have a record that compares to ours since gruden took over. What they got 4 south titles combined. I will take our record over any one elses in our division since gruden took over. Think about what your writing before you post. James A is right. How many player have we had come through this organization in the last 7 yrs. How many left because they wanted to. Just a couple. you cant make every player happy no matter how hard you try.

CVal…wow. Are you real. Let’s dial up any doc in the NFL and see if a player with a ‘transfusion’ would be allowed to re-enter a game. Transfusion = internal bleeding. May have received it ‘AFTER’ the game in the locker room. I-V during the game. The antogonism is staggering. And never knew being an informed, objective fan made us fascist. Someone send this guy a dictionary on that. Stop the hate! Stop the hate! Play football! Play football!

Dave, Most of us don’t listen to WDAE afternoon drivetime anymore because it is hosted by a biased hater. Name the players (besides Simms) who want out and don’t want to play here? Names? Lynch didn’t WANT to leave. Sapp didn’t WANT to leave. Rice didn’t WANT to….leave . Kelly wanted to leave simply because he lost his starting job. Names Dave. Names….tune in today and Steve might give ya some.

Doug Revis, what are you talking about? Simms almost died cause of a ruptured spleen and what? That’s Gruden’s fault? They brought him back too early? Like when? 2007 training camp? Don’t be an idiot.
Posted by Mitch R, NYC on 06/11 at 07:10 PM
Jim Chump, Get over myself? The proof is in the pudding. Ask Keyshaw? Ask Keenan? Are you kidding? Two selfish players who aren’t happy anywhere. Why dont you ask people like: Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, Derrick Brooks, Rich Gannon, Joey Galloway, and Yes Jeff Garcia. He may be unhappy about his contract, but Gruden was the one he came to Tampa for. I also don’t remember Alstott going anywhere when his contracts were up. Gruden doesn’t handle the money Allen does, so just because guys are unhappy due to their contracts doesn’t mean they don’t love their coach. Why don’t you think before you post.

Mitch R, NYC What are you talking about ??? Everyone loves to play for him ?? I think if you would ask Garcia if he loves Gruden we all know the answer to that. Griese was pissed when he was traded to the Bucs that was reported on several sites. Ask McCardell, Keyshawn, Alstott, & Sims. and the list goes on. Are you kidding me ??? You need to get over yourself !! The Bucs have millions under the salary cap and raise the price of tickets . They won’ttake care of Graham or Garcia with all this money ?? Hilliard and Carter are just glad they have a job. 1 SB and 3 South titles mixed in with alot of losing seasons !!

I’m sorry, But I don’t recall him ever coming back after that spleen injury. Am I missing something here ? They gave him 2 million dollars to sit on the bench when they could have just let his ##### go. And if your talking about that game itself, he didn’t even know he had that injury until after the game. Nobody knew. If you gave me millions of dollars to play football I’d leave my guts on the field too. What ever happens happens as long as my family is taken care of.

I am sorry I have to post. It is obvious some of you do not understand what is going on here. Gruden and Bruce Allen are liars and bring in questionable people with records. As for Sims, MitchR, he had a spleen injury which he could have died. Then they had the nerve to bring him back when he wasn’t ready. Listen to Wdae620am, from the players themselves. Atleast with Dungy things were on the up and up none of these character issues and he told the truth. Players are leaving, not wanting to come here and be treated this way.

CVAL, you’ve been a fan since ‘76. Who cares? You must be getting old or never knew what you were talking about. Grad stepped in and did at least as well as Simms with the same line. How is that possible? When you don’t just stand there and throw the ball to the D-line, you don’t get beat up as much. I will credit Simms for showing toughness for one game. He did play with a terrible injury. I will not call him a hero for that. As much as a baby as he appears to be now, I bet he would have left the game had he known he had more than a cracked rib or something. No one knew about the injury until later, so it’s hard to give the guy so much credit just for playing through some pain. Players do it all of the time.

You know, all this b.s is funny. I am a navy doc who has been to Iraq and has seen first hand soldiers die on the table in front of me and I couldn’t do anything..and someone had the nerve to call Chris Simms a hero? This guy plays football!!! It’s not rocket science! Yes u have to be physically fine tuned but, do u think that if he knew he had a ruptured spleen he would have continued? I know guys who knew they would bleed out if they went back for a buddy but did it anywayz b/c THEY WERE HEROES! I love the bucs but people…letz keep this in context…

Jamie, your point is well taken. Many of us are Football Junkies & come to the site for real important Football news about the Bucs. Please refer to Anwar’s recent report from OTA’s. Very good informative news. I would like to hear about our new Rookie crop and their progress. Unfortunately I think that The Buc’s Organization has banned Roy, Ira & their group from 1 Buc Place do to their negativity, hate for Gruden, & their constant bashing of this team’s decisions. I wish they would stick to Football & the Positive, but I’m a glutten for punishment.

3.5 million here 3.5 million there and pretty soon you are talking about a whole lot of money.

Thanks for the update, Roy. Unlike a lot of other a-holes that reply here, I enjoy reading your updates. They keep reading even though they keep complaining. If they were really dissatisfied, they would not even be responding.

Drew, I could not agree more. A conditioned response. Jim Chupp I think you are probably a very nice guy, but I have to disagree with you. I’m not ridiculous. I just like to have fun & defend this team that I love and support through thick & thin, no matter who owns them, coaches them, plays for them, or carries the water bottles, to the Parking attendants & Tampa Bay’s & Hillsborough County’s Finest that work the Games and show so much restraint with our sometimes out of control fans. Where else can you go to a great game, get drunk, get in a fight with some Jerk, get thrown in the tank & released to drive home Drunk? Oh ya, Cleveland & Philidelphia, but that’s it.

Jim, get over yourself. Players LOVE to play for Gruden. Simms loved Gruden, Garcia loves Gruden, Griese is coming back for seconds because of him. Hilliard, Kevin Carter, Brooks, Galloway, and the list goes on. All of these guys love Gruden. He’s a players coach and the players respect him. Sure, he makes the tough call and cuts players. Sure he loves competition and expects perfection. But what coach doesn’t? Everywhere Gruden has coached, they have won. We have 1 SB and 3 South Titles, Oakland was a perrenial playoff team, Philly won when he was a coach, and don’t forget about Green Bay. He’s a winner and we’re lucky to have him.

A hero is an individual who unselfishly covers a grenade without regard to their own personal safety. There’s no thought process involved in this action, it’s purely a reactionary response.
Chris doesn’t fall into to this category. Don’t think for a second he wasn’t telling the Team Dr. I’m OK. I’m of the opinion it was a selfish act on his part. He undoubtedly knew if he left the game for any reason he’d no longer be the starter. Struggling QB’s will do things most QB’s wouldn’t even consider doing and this is where they FAIL.

You Bucs fans are ridiculous !!! Instead of focusing on how much of a whinner Sins is you should concentrate on how he and other players have been treated by Gruden. Have you thought about that ??? This is coming from players not you guys assuming what happened !!! The guy played quarters with a ruptured spleen and you guys want to call him a baby !! LMAO. Players today ( not only Sims ) have a different mindset than when most of us played and its not going to change, but Gruden definately needs to change his perspective !! Noone will want to come here and play under this guy and the Bucs will go back to mediocrity !!

BigBucFan, you are 100% correct
Posted by Mitch R, NYC on 06/10 at 07:08 PM
CVal, all football players are tough and you don’t have to sacrifice your spleen to prove your toughness. On any given Sunday, you’ll see guys fighting for their lives and playing through injuries. Chris Simms played his heart out and I appreciate it, but again, don’t whine because things aren’t going your way. He signed a 2 year deal 1 year ago when he knew he wasn’t fit enough to play. Now that he’s in shape and buried on the depth he now wants to move on. I understand that, but don’t play the unfair card. He was paid, and payed nicely for doing nothing but rehabbing last year. He needs to grow up and be a man.
Posted by BigBucFan, Sarasota on 06/10 at 07:05 PM
Simms never did anything heroic in his life. He 1’st Panicked (as usual) 2’nd he ran around the end and lowered his head (another mistake) & 3’rd he took a freak hit (not overly hard) to his frail body. It was a freak occurence. Not Heroic. Thank the good Lord, he was diagnosed, treated & recovered. Hero? Gunnery Sgt Dan Daily was a hero, Chesty Puller, Hero. Every single soldier that is overseas facing our Enemies, Hero. The Doctors & Nurses on the Battlefield, Heroes. Running head long into a fire fight to rescue your buddy that’s shot & bleeding, Hero. Cval I think your definition of Hero is as wrong as your definition of Moron. If you were a Marine, I’d guess it was an Admin Pogue 2’nd LT WM that didn’t tell when asked. Semper-Fi

Give me 2 million dollars I’ll leave my spleen on the field too. I wouldn’t care who I was playing for. I’d do it for 1 million or even less.
Posted by todd, PSJ, FL on 06/10 at 06:41 PM
Gruden hasn’t commented on the Simms matter is because he is through with him, whats there to talk about ? See ya Chris !!! We don’t need you anyway.
I would like to see the Garcia situation work out but if not we can still win the division with Griese,McCown, and Josh Johnson. If we don’t have a good start in like the first 6 or 7 games I’d go ahead and throw Josh Johnson in there and let him get some good playing time in. Whats there to lose? This way he might be ready to go for next season.

I love these people who bash Gruden and think that we are running a prison camp rather than an NFL team. Players dont want to leave, and for the most part we’ve done a great job keeping our key players over the past 7 years. The ones that we have let walk were deemed expendible at the time, right or wrong. I can’t think of a player who didn’t stay when given the opportunity. Probably DeWayne White is one of the few, and I honestly don’t think that he was missed.
