TAMPA—Like the man who succeeded him as coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jon Gruden can’t say enough about rookie QB Josh Freeman.
A few days after Raheem Morris declared the Bucs are “married’’ to their first-round draft pick out of Kansas State, Gruden predicted Tampa Bay will win more than seven games in 2009. Appearing on ESPN, the new Monday Night Football commentator also said that Freeman, who has moved up to No. 2 on the depth chart behind Byron Leftwich, would develop into one of the league’s biggest stories of 2009.
Gruden was on a radio show Wednesday with MNF play-by-play man Mike Tirico and tabbed the New Orleans Saints to win the NFC South. Gruden spent a few days with the Saints in training camp and came away impressed with new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, anticipating a “blitz-frenzy attack.’‘
He also said Drew Brees, who threw for an NFL-high 5,069 yards last year, deserves to be ranked with New England’s Tom Brady and Peyton Manning of Indianapolis when listing the league’s premier quarterbacks.
