Gruden Happy To Be 3-1

Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden fielded more questions about quarterback Brian Griese’s three-interception performance against Green Bay, but chose to focus on the three consecutive wins Tampa Bay has enjoyed since Griese took over in week two.

“What I say publicly and what I say behind the doors are two different things,” Gruden said. “I’m not going to be overly critical publicly. I got a lot of respect and confidence in Brian Griese. There are three or four throws he’s had the last two weeks that have hurt us, and there about 35 or 40 throws that have helped us.

“He made some throws yesterday after the third interception that were big-time plays. They changed the game in terms of field position. He made some decisions in the running game that were outstanding. So there are some areas, I think, that are very clear and obvious that we need to clean up. He knows where I stand and where our team stands on turnovers. We got to clean that up and we’re going to work our butt off this week to get that done.”

Gruden also said S Sabby Piscitelli hurt his right elbow. Piscitelli spoke in the locker room with a brace on that arm and said he would play through the pain as he struggled to put on a sweatshirt.

In addition, Gruden was unsure whether WR Joey Galloway would play this week at Denver, while adding T Jeremy Trueblood and G Arron Sears were both banged up against Green Bay, but their playing status did not appear to be in jeopardy.

Gruden also was very complimentary of his offensive line, which has not allowed a sack in 97 consecutive passing attempts.

“A lot of that is because of Griese. He does a great job of getting rid of the ball,” Gruden said. “Our line is doing some good things, no question about it. They were very good, particularly in the second half when we were running the football. When you throw the ball 97 or 98 times in a row, whatever it may be, without a sack, that’s a credit to a lot of guys. We’re really happy with our line. We expect them to continue to get better throughout the year.”

Finally, Gruden was happy his team is 3-1 and looked forward to this weekend’s game against Denver.

“This season is so long. It seems like training camp was last year,” Gruden said. “You can isolate four games and get familiar with them and get a couple of common themes; that’s big to help your guys focus, otherwise you’re looking at the big picture instead of a few steps in advance. We have to concentrate on the next month of the season, and some players who maybe didn’t play in the first quarter, are going to have to step to the forefront now.

“I just think it’s important to get familiar with Denver quickly, isolate the things we haven’t done well in the first quarter because those are the things that will come back to bite us in the second quarter. The things that we’ve done well, we’ve got to do better. I just try to break it down in a one-month segment so we can all try to focus in on the short term. If you go 3-1 in every quarter, the last I checked that was 12-4 and you’ve got home-field advantage for the most part.”

The Bucs are putting themselves in good position. Griese will get better

Amen, Klopfer.

This is the best o-line I’ve seen in Bucs history, hands down. AND they’re doing it with a ROOKIE RG. I hope they take their time bringing back Davin, but boy when they do, it’s gonna be fun.

Gruden and Griese need to go on a ##### cruise leaving channelside ASAP.  Put Garcia back in the line up, and get a new coach who knows how to run a team.

Just think how good this team might be if only we had a QB. Maybe this is the year when for only the fourth time in franchise history we use a first round pick on a QB instead of a 6th or 7th rounder. And while we’re at it, let’s use a 2nd round pick on a WR to replace Clayton.

AJ - It is you Gruden/Griese/Bucs haters who need to get on a cruise ship out-of-town ASAP!  Gruden has done his best job of play calling since Brad Johnson (2002) with Griese (both in 2005 and the past couple games).  Will Griese continue to throw picks - yes.  Will it be 3 per game - no.  Will Clayton stop dropping balls - maybe (not).  This is the best offense we’ve had since 2002 - we’re ranked 7th in the NFL!  We will only get better with Davin and Joey coming back and Brian getting better.  With the defense sacking and scoring and Dexter Jackson running instead of slipping - lookout!  We can be damn good!

A win is a win.  I remember when I was a kid the Bucs never won.  Lets be greatful that they are winning and tied for 1st place.  Imagine if they were losing?  I am proud of the team.  I don’t agree with everything that goes on during the game, but I can’t argue with the result.

AJ,
“get a new coach who knows how to run a team.”???

You do realize the Bucs are tied for 1st place and that the only team in the NFC that has a better record is the Giants. Seems like he’s running the team just fine to me. Maybe you’re talking about a different team.

Campy,
I hear you on the QB and WR, but you know, it takes a whole team to win. So, sometimes you have to work with a lesser-caliber player who is just good and not great. It’s clear that the Bucs have been focused on building a foundation these past couple of drafts (o-line, d-line, bringing youth to the defense). But I really have a feeling they will do as you suggest though and draft a QB and WR in the first rounds next draft.

What’s the deal w/ Joseph? Any word on his potential return? We’ll need him soon, particularly if Trueblood and Sears’ injuries require missed starts. Griese is killing me with some of the throws. I wouldn’t mind if Garcia got back in there but honestly he wasn’t playing that well either. The team looks to have good d, o-line play and chemistry so I think that could go a long way. If only our divisional foes would drop an occasional game.

Joseph practiced last week, but experienced a bit of a setback. As long as there are no injuries on the rest of the line, I say let him rest and heal completely. Zuttah has been filling in quite nicely for a rookie.

The outlook for CCC “Can’t Catch Clayton” is very bleak!!  This is the 4th year in a row that he can’t catch the football!!  However, he is going to test the free agent market!!  Let’s hope that Brucie and Chuckie don’t give him a 5 year contract for 50 mil or so!!  We have some very good tight ends that Can Catch, let’s start some of them at wide recv’r.!!  Anybody is better than Clayton!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not hating here but….Griese should have had more picks against Chicago and GB dropped an easy one early.  This guy just doesn’t get it done.  He hit the ref in the head for crying out loud, didn’t even know he was there.  Gruden needs to quit hating on Garcia who went to the Pro Bowl last year!

i agree with the comments only that support our fine bucs football team! i guest if every game was a perfact game then whats a perfact game? we just won back to back tough games against all pro def. and all i here is “fire gruden” “bench gresie”. get a life, the bucs are in prime positions for a great push to win this division, and to go deep in the playoffs. we have a sound def, and great running game, why is it that we have to have a perfact game each week for our fans to realize that we have a great young team! not only are we three and one but we are one play from being 4-0! i forgot who made the comment but the only team better than us in the nfc right now is the gi-aints! stop hating and give some support! we are doing great!

I’ve been very critical of a great deal of Jon Gruden’s moves and decisions. But the Bucs are 3 and 1 for crying out loud, and yes Brian Greise has plenty of room for improvement, but we are 3 and 1. I’m confident to have Garcia as a back-up QB, but we are THREE and ONE. Here is the Tip, if it is not broken (too bad), then don’t fix it, we have one loss and three wins.

What I’m liking,is that they make these screw ups and even several big ones, then they’re able to get over it and come back for the kill…That’s evidence of good stuff right there…Go Bucs!

Clayton still has his problems, but he is getting better, like the rest of the Team. Clayton has made a few key receptions. The INT was more him than Griese, but I still like Michael & think his best days are ahead of him. Griese has his ints but he is playing like a Rock. The whole team is solid like a rock. Not perfect yet, but when you consider they play maybe 40 plays on defense & only 2 are bad. On offense the same 40 and 3 are bad. They are hitting on all 8 cylinders, scoring more points than ever, and are up over 90% positive plays. When they get that last 10% dialed in, the rest of the NFL better look out. I rate the Giants #1 & Bucs #2 in the NFC now. They have learned how to win at all cost, but have to keep it going.

I’m not going to be overly critical publicly. That is Grudens comments. Well he sure was critical of Garcia after just ONE game. If the quarterback, I dont care who he is, keeps throwing 3 int’s a game your going to lose lots more than you will win. Proven fact in the NFL. Lets wait out a few more games and then see what excuses Gruden has to Keep big Bob in the game.

Lou C,
What exactly did Gruden say about Garcia that was “overly critical”? I read a vague quote about Garcia needing to “get his head right”. Is that overly critical?

Por (Lou C) on September 30, 2008 (Suggest removal)

I remember Gruden saying that Jeff left some plays on the field and seemed to be reacting slowly on some reads. How can you judge a QB on ONE game and after not playing much before. I see Payton Manning is still playing and he had the same problems. He is still not up to speed. Gruden is not a players coach and it shows here really bad.

There’s an old Southern expression: “Dance with the one you brung to the dance.” In other words: what you got on this Bucs team is what you got basically. So they will do the best with what they’ve got.  All this speculation about doing this, that or the other?  Is really better served at the end of the season. Right now, the coaches are putting together weekly game plans, to win with the personnel they have. This is a pretty darn good football team.

Lou C,
“How can you judge a QB on ONE game and after not playing much before”

That’s where I think so many people get it wrong. Gruden is judging more than just the game. Coaches base their decisions as much on training camp, practices, locker room and meeting room achievements as they do on the game. I think there was way more to Garcia’s behavior than what the public is privy to. We’re just not around to see it.

Michael,
You’re spot on there. This team, the coaches and players are figuring out ways to win games. That’s pretty exciting.

You mean we didn’t get the whole story? KIND OF LIKE LYNCH story? We didn’t get that one either. HE went to 3 more pro bowls. IF Jeff got on the wrong side of Gruden and he is being punished for it then Gruden is more child than coach in my book. LYNCH was let go and all we heard was it was time for a change, well that change cost up plenty for the next few years. Gruden is not a players coach and that is what lots of people say, not just me.

I don’t know if you call it Swagger or what, but these Bucs are sure regaining it. They are a Humble & Quiet Team when it comes to the press. They are very respectful & say good things about their upcoming opponents each week. I like that reserved approach they take, leaving the trash talking for others. Yet there is a Quiet confidence you can sense when they take the field & in everything they say & do right now. They are not imtimidated by any team & have no fear. It is Gruden’s team, but yet they are very Dungy-esque. Great minds often think alike. Keep it Going!

Lou, Lynch was let go because the last 2 years he had in tampa he was injury prone.  Its no good having a probowl saftey if he is always hurt.  Yeah, they should have kept him looking at it now.  Also did anyone hear that Det is shopping Roy Williams.  Tampa needs to go after him.
