Gruden Bristles Over QB Questions

Posted Oct 2, 2008 by Roy Cummings

Updated Oct 2, 2008 at 02:44 PM

TAMPA – We’re not quite sure why he felt the need to do so, but Bucs coach Jon Gruden reiterated emphatically on Thursday that Brian Griese is the Bucs starting quarterback.

When asked how he split up the quarterbacks reps in practice on Thursday, Gruden said, “The reps always go the same. We don’t have any quarterback controversy. Brian Griese took all the reps. [Jeff] Garcia took a little bit, obviously, and Luke [McCown] took his turn. Griese is the starter.’’

Gruden was then asked if Garcia would be the backup for this week’s game in Denver. That seemed to rile him a bit, too.

“Don’t’ know that,’’ he said. “We’ll make that decision when we get to the stadium. But does it matter to you?’’

“Yeah, if it didn’t matter we wouldn’t ask. It matters to the fans.’’

“Ok, we’ll let you know on Sunday. We don’t have any quarterback controversy at all. But Jeff is getting well and we’re excited about that.’’

The truth is it doesn’t matter except to those Gruden-haters, radio hosts, and “journalists” who like to stir sh—up with Gruden.  Griese is 3-0 and Garcia looked shockingly poor in the 1st game and rightfully was benched in favor of Griese.  To be honest, I prefer giving Luke McCown a chance over Garcia so how about you address my concern as a fan anonymous Trib writer?

having a coach with a personality is great.  I was in Cleveland with belicheck and the stupid Cleveland Media came to him with repeated questions…..one reporter asked what his gameplan would be against the Bengals…bill, in his drab voice and stare responded with, I don’t know, but if I did I wouldn’t tell you…..Gruden is taking the offensive and his team seems to be following his lead, or is it the other way around.

Well I like how the coach answer the QB’s sistutation. If that GB defense wasn’t so aggressive he wouldn’t have been incepted as much. I really believe that some of the teams that suppose to have good defenses will soon find out how good this offensive line preforms. I still believe that this may be a hidden plus this year its been a long time sense we had a good offensive line to go with our great defensive line. Also does anybody know how RB Williams is coming along and when do they think he will be ready to jump into the fire. GO BUCS

Gruden should just be like New England’s coach (Bellicheat) who gives the few word answers and annoys the heck out of reporters.  For example:

Who is the second string quarter back?

“Well, since Griese is the first string QB, second string is Luke McCown, Jeff Garcia, or Josh Johnson - we don’t have any other QBs.”

If the media follows up with, “Can you be more exact?”

He should say, “No.”

This is what New England does and he keeps his temper most of the time. Of course, I don’t think Gruden has the patience to take that kind of approach.

If Griese bounces 2 throws off of Clayton’s hands this week, Griese may have more INT’s this week than last week!!!  Griese must stop throwing to Clayton and get his INT percentage back down!!!  If Griese wins four in a row, what will half of you do or say next week in your so called postings????????????

would be nice to establish the run in Denver early…denver is scary at home, lots of silent counts with runs to bore the crowd and take them out of the game would be very beneficial this week.  Denver is something like 82-25 at home under Shanahan….this would be a stunning victory if the Bucs pull it out.

Look for Griese to get the hook early by Gruden, if he continues his poor decision making and poor execution, (not looking off DB’s), which causes INT’s. I posted on this blog last week: “Gruden won’t tolerate continued INT’s, EVEN if they win.” Look for Griese to dump the ball off to check downs or out of bounds rather than take chances. My feeling is: Griese is trying to do too much. He needs to be conservative, (unless the Broncos score first) and get the running game going; and that will open up the play action. The Bucs need few penalties, a good running game, good Defense, (put some pressure on Cutler), good field position and Matt Bryant booming kicks in that mile high, thin air.

Thank God our “Coach” made a Strong “Coaching Decision” by benching Garica….He was not ready start the season…It wasnt the fact that he didnt play any of the preseason games…It was the fact that he didnt get any of the rep’s with the first & second units in practice…All of the reps went to Griese & McCown…So when your watching the New Orleans game and you see Garcia consistently throw behind his intended targets over and over again…Your like dude, get your head outta your #####…Then he turned into Chris Simms on us ,by holding onto the ball for like 3yrs

Seriously,he was making the Saint’s secondary look way to dam good…Come on guys the Saints secondary has been like one of the worst Secondaries in the NFL for the last 3 or 4 years…And to top it off they were starting a Rookie…I like Garica, But he was not in game shape and it showed

Por (Who Dat!!!) on October 02, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Throwing behind the receivers…
Sounds like what happens when a QB is being rushed by a lineman…
The Saints’ secondary isn’t like the last few years or ten. We actually have competent CBs now. Porter is growing and you will see fewer mistakes from him as the season goes (Broncos game). We would probably be 4-0 if Deuce would have been there for the 3rd down conversions. Hell, there probably wouldn’t have been too many 3rd down conversions to worry about if Deuce would have been there. We now have a running game; our bruiser is back, and you’ll see the Saints back in 06 form, but even better, because our D is much better. And now that we have a running game, our D will be able to rest more.

Por (Who Dat!!!) on October 02, 2008 (Suggest removal)

A better O will always improve the D. Just wait, we are going to crush the Vikings and Carolina. Everyone will be able to see how bad ##### the Saints are going to be when watching the London game as well. I think the Saints are going to give the Bucs a hell of a game. I do think the Bucs are better then the Panthers, even with the QB issues, but I think the Saints have more talent, except at safety; we only have 1 good, athletic safety. I am not going to say that we will crush the Bucs because I know that game will be a close one no matter what. But I do think we are now in position to take the NFC south because of a healthy Deuce. Now if he goes down again, it will be over for the Saints, but until then, I think we will take the NFC south.

First of all what the hell is a saints fan doing on this page? Get the hell outta here! The saints suck, the first game against the Bucs was a fluke, the bucs were jus not together but now it is. The saints will not win the south. The next game, the bucs are ganna destroy the saints. I’m callin it right now, the Bucs blow out the saints by 4 TDS. Brees is ganna be eattin the grass like a cow.

This is an open forum and everyone is welcome to comment.  Except for NucFuBuc who is an idiot.  Bucs historically do lousy when they jet off to the west coast for a single game. Watch out.

Por (Michael Harris) on October 03, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Too funny CVal, Nashville about NucFuBuc. I assume you meant to write: “when they travel west.” Everyone with football knowledge knows that for an East team to go West is difficult; but going to Denver for a win is very, very difficult.  It’s all about the thin air and the home field advantage. Anyway, I get possessive of our blog when other team fans come “in the room” too. Especially AINTS fans. If the Bucs play turnover free ball, they can win in Denver.  But rest assured it will be a very difficult task.

Por (BigBucFan) on October 03, 2008 (Suggest removal)

I am glad to see some of the Aints fans back. Where’s CaliSaint? I am a little surprised at the Trash Talk with a team so lucky to be 2-2 & should be 0-4. The Aints have a great QB but Deuce has never done well against the Bucs. He is a has been, as he has been slammed repeatedly by the Buc’s D. I will agree with the Aints’ fans that their D was better than expected. Carolina is a good team, but their 15 minutes of fame is just about up too. Cval calling NucFuBuc an idiot is ridiculous. Cval has never made an intelligent comment in this forum, Ever, None, Zero, Zip, Zilch, Nada. I like the Bill Bilicheat comment, so true. He annoys everybody.

Good job, Gruden.  I like how the reporters play so coy as to suggest Gruden inexplicably felt the need to state who his starter was. I have yet to see a show on TV or hear it on the radio that they need to stick with Griese; even heard Dukes on NFL network last night talking about how he wouldn’t be starting, except that Gruden always has to have a QB in his doghouse and that’s where Garcia is.

Is the media this ignorant that they can’t fathom why he felt the need to make it clear? If he didn’t say it, tomorrow’s column would be about how Gruden’s silence indicates a QB controversy brewing.  Stop acting ignorant—we know you just want to sell papers and we get it.  But we’re smarter than that (well, except the AINTS fan).

Kidding.

Seriously though…this time last year, my Cowboys friends (the friend economy is struggling, obviously) said our division was easily the worst in football.  It’d be tough to argue that we’re anything but second behind the NFC East.  Saints have the talent to win it, as to the Bucs and Panthers.  And no defense wants to absorb the hits Atlanta dishes out each week with that running game and D-line.

I’m proud of our division; let’s keep showing up the rest of football by proving that (like in college) the south is where real football is played.

Go Bucs!

Revelatory.  Earth shattering.  Titillating.

Nice work getting this scoop, Tribune Hacks.  BrINT Griese starting in Denver after 3-straight wins and Chunky losing his patience.  That story must have taken a lot of investigative work to uncover.

The real relevant issue here is the number of INTs Griese has thrown.  People can say all day long that the Bucs are 3-0 with Griese at the helm, and I would say that the Bucs are arguably 3-0 in spite of Griese.  Statistically, you can’t throw 3 picks/ game and expect to be a championship level team, particularly when you have the kind of offense the Bucs have.  The reality is in the NFL teams like the Bucs have to protect the ball better than other more explosive teams that can perhaps bail themselves out due to their prolific offenses.  (cont’d)

Por (ss) on October 03, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Along those lines, the backup is relevant because I don’t think the Bucs can sustain success the way they are playing.  Winning 2 close games means you could have easily lost 2 close games.  While we may have ended up on the right side of the coin flip 2x in a row.  Chances are that we could lose 2 in a row as well if Griese doesn’t pick up his play from here on out.  IF he does not, then I would certainly hope that Jeff Garcia is the backup.  In that way, the backup is relevant IMO.

What annoys me as a fan is that it seems like Gruden is letting his Garcia grudge get the better of him at times, and it manifests itself when he is asked these types of questions.

That idiot from new Orleans makes me laugh, We have 0 sacks in the last 2 games, funny, and didn’t Ellis just go down for 4 weeks? sucks to be New Orleans, seeing how they are gonna lose the next 2 weeks and pretty much be in the toilet. I’m willing to (and have) forgive Brian his Int’s in the last 2 games. That being said, I’m not willing to forgive many more, but the receivers need to help out more also. The players seem to rally around Brian, as they did when he was here before, so I’m willing to give him some rope, as long as we are winning.
