Grothe’s top 3 memories

I asked University of South Florida QB Matt Grothe Tuesday for his top three memories while playing for USF. Most players would probably list significant victories or individual accomplishments as the highlights of their careers, but for Grothe, two of his top memories involved USF’s fans.

Here are Grothe’s top three memories at USF.

No. 1: “Coming out of the tunnel for the West Virginia game (Sept. 28, 2007 at Raymond James Stadium) and seeing that it was sold out,” Grothe said.

No. 2: “Winning at Auburn (Sept. 8, 2007), definitely, on my 21st birthday,” Grothe said.

No. 3: “And honestly Saturday, when I got hurt and heard everyone cheering for me when I came back on the field. That and all the (support) I’ve gotten in the last few days. That was really, really special,” Grothe said.

Glad I was there in person to see his top two moments… Thanks Matt.

My top two memories in USF football lore would be the Ben Moffitt interception against WVU (I’ve never seen our stadium so loud and so chaotic). You knew the night was going to be special!

Matt’s TD pass in OT to defeat Auburn would be second… I never wanted to leave the stadium after the official signaled TD!

1a. TD pass against Auburn
1b. Run to ignite comeback win against Kansas
1c. First bowl victory
(I can’t pick)

USF football lore….besides all the victories it has to be (1) the times Lou Holtz made the “Pep Talk” speech and (2) the commercial made between USF and WVU with Pat White, Grothe and Selvie.  Those two TV appearances are/were awesome.
