Tampa Bay recently rewarded DE Greg White with a three-year contract worth a little over $2.5 million.
The Bucs restructured White’s contract before their season opener against New Orleans. White, an exclusive rights free agent, was slated to receive $370,000 this season. The Bucs were not obligated to give White, who could not negotiate with any other team, more money than the league minimum. White begrudgingly signed that contract on the first day of training camp.
Now White will receive $370,000 this season and an additional $250,000 roster bonus. His base salary is $825,000 in 2008, while he is slated to receive $1.4 million in 2009.
In addition, White could make between $20,000 to $100,000 per sack in each season. That extra compensation depends largely on the amount of sacks he has each year.
“We were pleased the front office thought outside of the box and decided not to treat Greg like the undrafted free agent he was in 2007,” said Jack Bechta, White’s agent. “This deal would not have happened if not for the efforts of Bruce Allen [Bucs General Manager] and Kevin Demoff [Bucs Senior Assistant].
“Instead of guys in Greg’s situation who have a chance to play in the NFL skipping a trip to One Buc Place, this shows everybody they need to go there because they might treat you differently.”
White had 45 tackles, eight sacks, seven forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries last season, arguably the best performance by a Bucs defensive lineman. He accomplished that after playing for the Orlando Predators in the Arena Football League and entering the NFL without much of an offseason.
After Tampa Bay temporarily switching White to left end during this preseason, the Bucs moved him back to right end and he currently has 2.5 sacks in two games.

cval, this was a real necessity, huh? The guy already signed his tender and was a member of the team. They had no reason other than good business to give him this money. I shouldn’t even waste time responding to your senseless hatred of everything except for maybe our D, at least when they have a good week. Otherwise, your fair-weather nature kicks in. I hope we win another SB with a sub-16th ranked O just to show people like you what Tampa has been about since their success began.

Jake and John, it doesn’t appear that many agree with your ignorant hatred of our management. Erik, who sounds like he tends to be critical, even agrees that this was a good move. When will the rest of you realize that our team isn’t that bad and neither are the coaches and management? If you will never feel this way, give up. Why waste time on a team you hate. I know I’m not over on Carolina’s site bashing every single move they make. Get a life or a new team. We don’t need you.

Cval fisrt off Allen was not forced to do anything. he was rewarding White for his performace. How is his raise meager. He will avg almost 1 mil per year with the opportunity to bonus over 1 mil extra per year depending on his performance. 2 million a year isn’t bad for a back up defensive end. I think all contracts should be incentive based, depending upon performance. It would inspire alot of players to continue to work hard even after they get thier big contracts. Good move Allen. Right on BicBucFan

CVal, the Buc Basher that doesn’t live here, doesn’t watch the Games or support the team in anyway, knows less about Football than a 5 yr old & his hero is Hugo Chavez. Two Words for you Pal. Suck It!

Necessity is the greatest part of valor. Allen was forced to give White a raise, even a meager one by today’s standard. Many, many players have turned their nose up at the Bucs due to lack of bucks, despite huge cap space. That’s the truth. If the Off was as good as the def, Bucs could hang with the Colts, Cowboys, Eagles, Packers, Patriots, etc. They can’t. Why, Mr. Genius? Griese’s performance was average at best. If Def hadn’t given them such awesome field position, they wouldn’t have won. Hope Def continues at high level…Bucs only chance.

hey jake? what about tanard, sabby, talib, sears, trueblood, adams, joseph, ruud, alex smith or the pick ups of undrafted players such as graham. thats 10 starters! i wont even metion backups. see, you are an idiot. said it before and ill say it again. next time do some research before stinking this place up with your oral defication.

I think its a good idea to give a guy an incentive laden contract when they have proved they have outplayed there contract, but have not proved that they could play every down.
Good job on both sides.

Well overdue, this guy played his heart out last year and earn every penny he is making. Garcia should learn from this guy. Well done! “Go Buc’s”

Classy move for a classy player. Jeff Garcia take a look….let your play do the talking and the money will come. No need to pat yourself on the back…just do the job!

Hey Jake - Just one question - is your name Martin Fennelly? Is it? Tell the truth. Is it? Oh, crap, that’s three questions. Anyhoo, Jake, do us all a favor and take you and your hot-dog stand to Key West. I understand they really love weiners down there so you would fit in really well.

No Jake… you’re the ID10T. The reason the Bucs were stuck with bargain shopping is because your man-crush, Rich McKay, put us in salary cap purgatory. Study the facts before you or the rest of the ID10T media post.

I think Gruden and Allen have no class but even I have to applaud this one. It keeps one of the best raw talents on the roster motivated while not breaking the bank. Well done on many levels.

Sad to say, but it seems as if nothing will shut the Gruden/Allen bashers up. They have it set in their empty heads. Anything positive the Bucs do, they will spin into a Negative. They don’t support the Bucs. They say they do since 1976 and blah, blah, blah, but they hate Gruden & they know everything. Greg White took a leap of Faith and signed his contract for the minimum. Now he is being rewarded for his efforts and he’ll never have to work at Best Buy with all these Gruden Haters again. And by the way, Truffles cost more per pound than Gold. See if you can root up a few more. It may help our economy.

Bruce Allen? Thinking out of the box? In this case? Yes. I have to give credit for one descent move. That is all I will give him. Until Allen shows us some solid consistant moves I’m still NOT a drinker of the Gruden/Allen kool-aid!!! Hey, Gruden. RUN the ball! Welcome home Warrick! GO BUCS!!!
Posted by Michael Harris, Oldsmar, FL on 09/15 at 04:59 PM
That’s a good move. He’s a very solid football player. I like what Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen are doing with this team.

Nice move and good to see a hardworking guy rewarded. Doubt if this will shut up the Gruden haters, though. Turned on the radio this morning and you would have thought the Bucs had lost. Why, because Gruden replaced a struggling Jeff Garcia with Brian Griese who completed twice as my third down opportunities. If Garcia and fans want to keep sulking because the Bucs tried to sign a hall of fame QB, get over it. Gruden’s job is to upgrade this team at whatever position he can. As Jamie Dukes said on the NFL channel, “Grow up.” I root for the team, not the player.

ref813,
Is that you Bruce?
As my pop always said… A blind pig roots up a truffle now and then.

No, Ref 813. Appears your the idiot that cant run a hot dog stand. Look at all the poor drafting over the past few years and the bargain shopping for talent off the geriatric shelf. This offense is anemic and will be lucky to generate enough offense to win 6 or 7 games at most. He always looks for quick fixes and builds nothing.
Posted by ref813, memphis on 09/15 at 01:57 PM
I thought Allen was supposed to be a big idiot who couldn’t run a hot dog stand. What do you bashers have to say about this very smart business move? This is great for White. I had hoped they would do it sooner, but now is better than never. This good will should go a long way, if he continues to be great and begins begging for more money in the future. They can always go back and say, “look what we did for you when we didn’t even have to.” Thanks, Bruce. Some of us appreciate your good work.

Good Job. Now get 12 sacks and push us into the playoffs, Greg!

Good move by management. He has earned his money, no need to treat him like a step child. Take care of those who take care of you.

Like I said elsewhere, I hate when the team makes good business decisions.
