Before Brandon’s Eric Grajales heads to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Las Vegas this summer, the Eagles’ junior wrestling standout will try to secure his third consecutive berth on the United States’ Junior World Team.
Grajales, a three-time state champion at Brandon, will wrestle in the 60 kilogram Greco-Roman division at the FILA Junior World Team Trials, which are scheduled for May 23-24 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. If Grajales wins his division he will qualify for the FILA Junior World Championships, scheduled for July 29-Aug. 3 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Grajales won the 55 kilogram Greco-Roman division at last year’s trials, and the 50 kilogram Greco-Roman division at the 2006 trials.
This competition will be the start to a busy summer for Grajales, who is regarded as one of the nation’s top prep wrestlers. In June, Grajales will wrestle in arguable the biggest tournament of his career - the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Grajales qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in April with a fifth-place finish in the Senior Men’s 55-kilogram/121-pound Greco-Roman division at the 2008 Las Vegas/ASICS United States National Wrestling Championships. The Olympic Trials are scheduled for June 12-15 in Las Vegas. The winner of each division will represent the U.S. at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
