Gradkowski on trade block?

TAMPA - Chris Simms may not be the only Bucs quarterback who rival teams have little or no interest in trading for.

The Bucs appear to have at least floated Bruce Gradkowski name in trade talks during last weekend’s draft. Obviously, no one took the bait.

The attempt to move Gradkowski comes as no great surprise. The Bucs have a logjam at the quarterback position that only got worse when they drafted Josh Johnson in the fifth round out of San Diego on Sunday. It’s no great surprise that no one bit on Gradkowski either.

The Bucs were expected to draft another quarterback, thus expanding their glut of them to seven, if you count Jake Plummer. As a result, anyone who really would want Gradkowski, Simms or maybe even Luke McCown knows it will have a shot at them later this summer, when one or more of them is let go.

The Bucs have already said they have plans to bring just five quarterbacks to camp and with Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese and Johnson sure to fill three of those spots, one from the group of Simms, Gradkowski and McCown is likely to be moved before camps opens.

Of course, if the Bucs really wanted to alleviate the logjam they could probably move Griese. Word is the Bucs received several inquiries about Griese’s availability during the draft. The Bucs apparently made it clear, however, that they have no interest in letting Griese get away a second time.

Teams don’t sign QB’s in the off season, and then trade them before camp because down the road other free agents will avoid you like the plague.  Trading Griese is about as likely as trading Garcia.

Simms has almost zero trade value.  His QB rating was in the toilet before he lost his spleen and he hasn’t played in about 2 seasons.  Gradkowski has a 64 QB rating.  Perhaps some team had intended to draft him in the 7th round, but when we snatched him up in round 6 they lost out.  I don’t think the Bucs were seriously trying to trade any QBs.  Maybe Gruden was taunting McKay at some point.

*LAUGHS* .. Look Tampa is in the best shape at the QB position in many years Garcia is a legit starter in this league Griese is a proven back up with success here in our system McNown is the only QB out of the other three with any trade value but is a solid third QB. So lets just cut our losses with Bruce and Chris wish them the best maybe Chris can catch on with the Jets and Bruce Arena football or Canadian is your only option

Just a thought. Gruden has a complicated offensive system (prob. more complex than any other West Coast variations)All QB’s the Bucs draft have failed in this system, but veterans who’ve played in other W. Coasts can grasp it. I am not a Gruden hater at all, but perhaps Jon’s system & high-pressure style are unable to develop young QBs. Either that or the Bucs are really bad at drafting QBs.
If you look at the defense in comparison, it’s a fairly simple one-gap zone scheme (with other zone and man schemes disguised within the cover-2) Young players can come in as rookies/1st years can succeed . Maybe a young Joe Montana would also fail here.

When are you people going to wake up? Chris Simms is untradeable, who would want him at any price?  If reliable backups are going for 6th and 7th round picks, why would any GM give up anything for a guy who hasn’t played in 19 months?  Bringing Griese back was absolutely the right thing to do.  It gives us insurance if Garcia can’t finish a game due to his experience and knowledge of the system.  Simms was a hell of a competitor, but unfortunately, his career is pretty much over in TB.  I wish him the best, but realistically, what can he offer?

I’ve really think the Bucs made a terrible mistake in bringing Griese back prior to the draft. Then Tampa should resign Garcia with a year or two Extension. I think that if Tampa would have been patience after the draft. Then Tampa could have given upa 6 or 7 rd next year. Plus maybe Simms would have been traded before the draft.

...serious about QB ready to start day are u serious...pick a top rated QB rnd 1. Bengals pick up 3 WRs in draft 08!?..ocho fears… The WRs gave Garcia nothing to throw at during the playoffs. I agree Jeff can’t take the pounding toward the end but at least give him some weapons. DraftGuys.com showed Jackson needs skills “..lets the ball attack him instead of..”. I thought Caldwell video was better. Devin Thomas will excell. CB in the 1st...Barber was 3rd round in 97. I agree M Bennett is great value and speed.
Hell I would have agreed w/ DT Kentwan Balmer as a first round pick. Draft:B- Saying you are going to wait three years to discuss this is kookie...now bar-keep BEER me! ...oh Draft 07 A-.

Bill Mac, for your audacious comment about the “spleenless” Chris Simms, let’s hope, youngster, that nothing so life threatening ever happens to you.  No matter what you think of his ability, that man spilled his guts on the field of battle (something a gutless wimp like you has never done).  He played behind a O-line of has beens and rookies that couldn’t block their own grandmother at the time.  After a blood transfusion, Simms went back on the field to try to rally his team.  He’s tough and a real man.  No doubt, you’re the one hanging with male models at your backside.

simms needs a fresh start...moving him makes sense if you can get any futrue draft pick for him...perhaps nyj...mccowan is a very servicable back up...’ski is the odd man out...too bad, by all accounts he’s a good teammate and a good guy, that just doesn’t equate to w’s...they still need a big target wide-out, not someone that played for the emerald city in the wizard of oz conference…
anyone seen dominic rhodes lately??  he wouldn’t be the worst pick-up…

greg i have to agree with you on the shotgun issue...chris simms was in the shotgun half the time when he played for texas...i think with his arm strength and his accuracy with the long ball that might actually really help him out…

Posted by  patrick dotson, tampa,fl on 04/29  at  05:49 PM

i think simms is goin to prove alot people wrong if he gets a chance in training camp...i really feel that his injury and all the negative writeups bout him are goin to push him harder to show everybody he can still play and be affective…

Gruden release Gradkowski. It only complicates your ability to monitor the progress of the other QB’s. Try to trade Simms after the camps begin, but take a look at him before you do. Just in case he has recovered. We never did see him in the shotgun offense!

I think this Josh kid will be a good quarterback for us in the future. This guy is a pocket passer that can run-go look at his stats.I’m not an expert like Mel Kiper or Jimmy the Greek but in the right system with the right QB coach this guy will be special. He is better than Gradkowski right now-well i’m better than Gradkowski right now.
The heat will be on this season for Garcia with Griese breathing down his back.Griese will start because i don’t think Garcia have enough in the tank and will struggle this season-remember he is 38 yrs old.

No surprise that no one would give up a pick for this guy. He is terrible and couldn’t hit a bulls behind with a snow shovel!! Welcome to Arena ball Bruce.

HFXBUC, thanks for making perfect sense.  Guys, he’s 100% correct.

boys our best QB is Jeff Garcia? He’s not that good unless he is in a great system, he fades late in the year because he breaks down.  Look at last years stats and QB Ratings (only Rex Grossman would be envious)

Myabe the Greise should start weeks 1-14 then let a fresh and energized Garcia comes for the run into the playoffs

We don’t have a QB of the future so bring in a bunch and find one.  Josh Johnson has the 2 most important tools a QB needs: Accurate and Smart.  Might be the best piece of a pretty good draft

Jason Taylor?  He’s awesome but getting up there and probably isn’t awesome with his hand on the ground anymore.

This is addressed to Jordon and anyone else who thinks we wasted a pick. Josh Johnson has been groomed and developed for Gruden. Using Gruden’s offense. Gruden is friends the the San Diego staff. The college use’s Gruden’s west coast offense. Plus the kid is a bad ass. He is faster then Vick on his feet, and has a very good arm. He also is very protective of the ball. Who cares if he is from a smaller school? Go look up his stats and find some video on him.

are some of you high? taylor for a 3rd round pick?they wanted a 1st in this draft, so why would thay trade for a 3rd and #4 qb and wr. simms and clayton are the fourth spots on the bucs roster.  how does that equal premire defender.  how stupid are you really?  in that case lets trade the water boy and a cheerleader for roy williams.  get real morons.

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 04/29  at  03:44 PM

Do you really think that Chris Simms is a Super Bowl winning QB?  For crying out loud, he’s started 15 or so games in his entire career, doesn’t have a winning record and has thrown more INTs (17) than TDs (12), has been sacked 43 times and has had more batted balls than any QB I’ve ever seen in my life, yet people actually think that he’s going to leave teh Bucs and then lead a team to a super bowl.  That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.  And people also have the audacity to think that Gruden didn’t give him a chance.  Gruden let Griese walk, handed him the starters job and didn’t bother getting a competent backup because he was confident in Simms.  WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!

Posted by  Jordon, Brandon on 04/29  at  03:38 PM

I think the Bucs wasted a pick on a QB this draft. Garcia is obviously the starter, and Greiese is a safe backup. Let Grads and McCown fight it out thru camp to see who comes after that. Both young guys have at times, looked awesome, and both have at times looked like a deer in the headlights. Bruce has struggled to throw the deep ball, and Luke takes too many freakin sacks!! But both are young and promising, and only have 2-3 years of pro experience.. remember Garcia played 5 years in the CFL before starting out 4-12 in his first year with the 49ers. Simms will never be able to regain his status as the starter here in Tampa. Let him go somewhere else to get back on track.

chris is a good qb if only gruden would give the man a chance. its going to be the same story. we ship off a young qb and he wins a superbowl with another team. how long do you think chris simms lasts on the waiver wire before parcells picks him up ?

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 04/29  at  02:32 PM

Dan, you do realize you are criticizing the 7th round pick, right???  Last time I checked, depth is something needed, especially at Running Back.  If we didn’t have Earnest Graham, where would we have been last year?  And if EG goes down this year, who’s our workhorse?  Not Dunn and not Bennett.

Posted by  Dan Shreve, Titusville, FL. on 04/29  at  02:16 PM

Alright Mitch, maybe we ought to throw in one of our 7 RBs too. I don’t understand why we picked up another RB
in the 7th round anyway. Thats the only pick I didn’t understand.Over all the Bucs did a good job in the draft.

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 04/29  at  01:48 PM

I wish you people would stop thinking that Chris Simms and Michael Clayton are valuable trading assets.  Face it, they’re not.  If they were, they probably would have been traded already.  Simms/Clayton and a 3rd round pick isn’t going to net a premier player, NFL GM’s are not that stupid!  I think that Clayton is fine for us right now.  He’s a very good blocker and will probably catch 30-40 balls next year (if healthy).  Simms on the other hand, is toast.

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 04/29  at  01:41 PM

Thanks for the translation Dan!  Although I’d love to see Jason Taylor opposite of Gaines Adams, I don’t think that Parcells is that inept to trade for Chris Simms or Michael Clayton for one of his best defenders. From what I’ve read, it’s going to take a 1st or 2nd round pick for Taylor and I don’t think it’s worth it for a 34+ year old player.

Posted by  Dan Shreve, Titusville, FL. on 04/29  at  01:17 PM

Mitch, What I was saying is that Phill
Simms has won Superbowls with Bill Parcells. Bill should try and give Phills son a chance with him. So we should trade Simms/Clayton and our 3rd round pick next year for Jason Taylor.
