All of the activity at the Trop right now is down the right field line, where Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton are signing autographs. It’s going to be hopping before too long, though, with the Rays’ fifth sellout of the season already in the books and LL Cool J set to perform after the game. I’m excited about that. Others are not. To each his own.
The Rays will look to Andy Sonnanstine to keep it rolling against Plant City’s own Kenny Rogers and the Tigers. The Rays have what looks like a day-game lineup in there today, but that’s mostly a preemptive strike for tomorrow. Joe Maddon wanted to make sure he was loaded up with lefty hitters against Armando Galarraga in the series finale, as the rookie is holding right-handed hitters to a sickening .144 average. So Dioner Navarro gets his day off today rather than tomorrow, when the Rays will stack six lefties against Galarraga.
There isn’t anything new on the Rocco Baldelli front today. He’s en route from Montgomery and is expected to report to the Trop tomorrow for another round of discussions and perhaps some physical tests to see where he’s at. He could be activated in the next few days, or he might not. The Rays just don’t seem sure right now and it sounds like they mostly want to get a firsthand look at the guy and see how it goes.
That’s about it tonight. Here are the lineups:
Tigers
Granderson CF
Polanco 2B
Guillen 3B
Ordonez RF
Cabrera 1B
Joyce LF
Sheffield DH
Renteria SS
Inge C
Rogers P
Rays
Iwamura 2B
Upton CF
Crawford LF
Longoria 3B
Pena 1B
Gomes RF
Aybar DH
Riggans C
Bartlett SS
Sonnanstine P

The Rays want to look at Baldelli??? Don’t they trust their minor league coordinator and staffs? If he’s really alright, there is NO reason to delay activating him.Grow some stones Friedman, cut someone and activate Rocco if he is OK!

Come on, Ron—it’s not like the guy’s coming back from a sprained knee. The last thing they need is to cut somebody, activate him, and find out Rocco can’t do what they need him to do. I don’t think anyone knows exactly how his body will react to full-on major league game speed right now.
