Mychal Givens’ high school baseball career may be over, but there is one recent notable achievement for the former Plant High standout worthy of mention.
Givens was a 2009 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner. The Gold Glove winners were selected by Rawlings in conjunction with the American Baseball Coaches Associated. Nine players were honored at at each of the following levels: NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, Pacific Association, NAIA, Junior College Divisions I, II, III, and high school. Givens was chosen as the shortstop recipient for high school players.
The Rawlings Gold Glove has been the standard for outstanding defensive play at the major league level. In 2007, the 50th anniversary of the award, it expanded to the collegiate and high school levels.
Each winner will receive their own Rawlings Gold Glove Award, and the award winner’s school will receive a duplicate award as well.
Givens was a second-round draft choice by the Baltimore Orioles following his senior season at Plant. He signed with the Orioles over accepting a baseball scholarship to Oklahoma State.
