University of South Florida freshman DE Ryne Giddins injured his ankle during Wednesday’s practice and is likely headed for a medical redshirt, Coach Jim Leavitt said.
“He hurt his ankle bad. We’re going to get X-rays (Thursday). … It’s a high ankle sprain, so it’s not good,” Leavitt said. “We’ll have to wait and see how this comes along. We’d like to play him if we can.”
Giddins, from Armwood, has played in three games so far and has registered three tackles and two sacks.
MO’S STILL THE MAN: Running backs coach Carl Franks said if the Cincinnati game was tomorrow Mo Plancher would remain the starter.
Plancher leads the running backs with 239 yards and four touchdowns, but has gained only 46 yards in the past three games and had a costly fumble against Syracuse.
“The turnover was an egregious error,” Franks said. “But Mo’s been a very reliable guy for us, and he’s still a guy I trust. He’s still going to play a lot for us. … Certainly Mike Ford’s going to play, and we’ll see how the game goes who plays the most.”
ODDS AND ENDS: QB Matt Grothe had surgery on his knee Wednesday. … RB Lindsey Lamar (hip) “has an excellent chance to play” against Cincinnati, while RB Aston Samuels (stomach) “isn’t quite as far right now,” Franks said. … Several players and coaches are battling the flu. … USF will not practice Thursday or Friday, during which time coaches will be out recruiting. The Bulls will resume workouts Saturday-Tuesday in preparation for Cincinnati on Oct. 15.
