Dublin (Ga.) High OT Trent Barnes verbally committed to the University of South Florida, Dublin coach Roger Holmes told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution Wednesday.
“He enjoyed the relationship he established with the people who recruited him,” Holmes said. “It’s a successful Top 25 program that has the opportunity to win a national championship.”
Also a possible tight end, Barnes (6-3, 242) also received offers from Troy, East Carolina and Western Kentucky, Holmes said
“He has excellent hands, and he is extremely athletic,” Holmes told the AJC. “He doesn’t play tight end for us because of the type of offense we run, but he can do that at the next level if he doesn’t put on the needed weight to be an offensive lineman.”
Barnes also plays basketball for Dublin. His brother, Thomas Barnes, plays linebacker for North Carolina State.

Not that every guy is going to be like this, but there’s another under-sized Offensive Lineman we recruited a few years ago that only had 1 Division 1A offer: George Selvie.

I don’t like it. A 242-pound T is just way too small, and we have 4 seniors, so we should be recruiting more “instant” impact guys instead of another down-the-road guy. And at TE, there are many options for us in Florida.
I’m not concerned about his star-ranking; I’m concerned that we started recruiting a non-BCS player so early. I almost always give our staff the benefit of the doubt (like with Damien Edwards), but it’s August and judging by this guy’s scholarship offer list, there are likely better players out there. At TE, Gabe Holmes is one such player (and that position shouldn’t be such a priority). At T, we need some 290+ pound guys who can play right away.

Little light for an OL but I guess he can either put on weight or move to tight end like his coach says he can play. We are moving towards lighter OL guys now, too.

Allen, speaking of Selvie, check out my latest blog post: Selvie has some pretty loft goals for this fall.
