John Jancek, who has been linebackers coach at Georgia since 2005, is the latest to have been offered the defensive coordinator position at the University of South Florida.

Jancek, 40, originally was being considered as a co-defensive coordinator at USF with Colorado secondary coach Greg Brown, but Brown turned down the offer to be co-coordinator Sunday and is staying at Colorado.

With Brown out of the mix, Jancek was offered the defensive coordinator position by USF coach Jim Leavitt Sunday.

Before coming to Georgia, Jancek was defensive coordinator at Central Michigan in 2004. In 2003, he was defensive line coach at Central Michigan and from 1999-2002, he was defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Division II Grand Valley State, his alma mater. GVSU won the 2002 D-II national championship.

He also was defensive coordinator at Hillsdale College from 1996-98 and was defensive tackles coach at UCF in 1996.

Jancek is the fourth individual that has been offered either the coordinator or co-coordinator job by Leavitt, joining Brown, Illinois co-defensive coordinator Dan Disch and Nebraska linebackers coach Mike Ekeler.

How long has Jancek’s offer been on the table?

If Leavitt is trying to follow the K-State model of hiring co-defensive coordinators it may explain the hesitancy and ultimate decision to turn down the job from the last couple candidates.

Maybe I’m reading to much into this but Ekeler’s comments about “the right situation for both sides” maybe make more sense.

Per Brett wink

“With Brown staying at Colorado, Jancek was offered the defensive coordinator position by Leavitt on Sunday. However, Jancek decided to remain at Georgia, where he’s been linebackers coach the past four seasons.”

Holy moly! OK Leavitt, just pay Tresey whatever the hell he wants, take it out of your salary. This is becoming beyond a joke.

Being a USF alum for both BA and MPH… this isn’t funny anymore and never really was. Troy Douglas (know the family personally) and Wally Burnham have left gaping holes on the defensive side of the ball. This co- defensive coordinator thing may need to go the way of the albatross as it is more of a hinderance than its novelty is worth. This may be evidenced by the numerous turn-downs of several people that would have made a vertical move and certainly an incrase in salary one would think. I was at the very first game ever sitting in the coaching family section at the “old sombrero” thanks to Kevin Patrick…at least there is one cat on the defense I am familiar with.

Leavitt don’t be cheap, the DC job is going to cost you since you got off cheap with the OC and prep school coach, can’t be cheap when hiring the DC…..time is wasting, tick tock.
