Jeff Garcia Says He Could Have Played

TAMPA - His relationship with Coach Jon Gruden is not fractured. So says Bucs deposed Bucs starting quarterback Jeff Garcia. His ankle isn’t fractured either. It’s a little sore, but not so sore that he cannot practice and could not play Sunday.

“The ankle, I’m going to go out and run around today,’’ Garcia said this morning. “I feel like it’s healing up fast. It was one of those things where I just rolled my ankle. It was stiff on Monday, but it got better as the week progressed. I feel like it’s at a point now where if I were the starter I would have been able to practice yesterday and today, but that’s not the situation.’‘

No, Garcia won’t get the chance to practice as the starter today or play Sunday because Bucs coach Jon Gruden has replaced Garcia with Brian Griese for this week (and maybe beyond), and, no, Garcia is not all right with that.

“Having only played one game, I would have liked to have been given a chance to battle through whatever I’m going through,’’ Garcia said. “But coach made that decision early in the week, and so I have to live with it.’‘

Like we said, he’s not happy about that. But he swears the situation has not fracture his relationship with Gruden.

“The relationship is not fractured,’’ Garcia insisted. “We’ve had some good talks, some good meetings. As much as that is difficult to take, not being the starter, we’re going to work through this together and I’m going to do whatever I have to do to better myself.’‘

How about this part of the interview where Garcia indicates that maybe he isn’t as focused as he needs to be:
“Well I’ve tried to do my best to put all that (contract squabble, Brett Favre speculation, and injury distractions) behind me. I can’t continue to focus on things that aren’t positive for this team,” said Garcia. “Those things aren’t positive. If I dwell on that then that takes away from whom I need to be for this team. I’ve really tried to redirect my energies into doing good things. I understand in the game on Sunday that there were a couple of plays that I left out on the field.

Hey Jeff!
Maybe if you had shown up in the last game, you might have played! I saw your preseason debut with Jax. You looked like hell! Maybe you ate too much garlic at the Gillroy Garlic Fest, who knows??! All I can say about being there live, is that Griese looked 10 times better than you! Remember Gruden just dates dude!!!!

I’m so sick of grown over paid millionaires that whine about not being treated with respect. Gruden is the boss, what he says goes, don’t like it? There’s the door.

I know if I whined and pouted like a little girl at my job to my co-workers, my boss would show me the door.

Jeff, you get paid very well to play a game, now grow a couple.

Anyone surprised

We got lucky last year…and his stats were poor and we won despite him Stout D and Running.

btw…where are all the guys who wanted to pay this dude like the second coming of Brett Favre?

He’s on his way to NE…maybe with Clayton….similar deal to what GB got for Favre…if he bombs we get nothing if they go to the SB we get a 1st round pick….

Looks like the honeymoon between Garcia and Gruden is over.

If we start out 2-5 or worse, can we just throw Josh Johnson into the fire and see what happens?

Gruden may rub some players the wrong way, but don’t we all have bosses like that at some point in our career?

How do we all deal with that? We keep our mouth shut and we wouldn’t think of telling the world about it.

Garcia telling the Media that He Could Have Played could have been innocent but unfortunately it stirs the pot because the Public is going to read into that comment that their is a problem in the Garcia / Gruden relationship.

Here’s the solution: Run the ball more, which seems to be the strength of the offense right now, and it helps make what ever QB is in there this year look better. Especially since our WR’s are struggling right now as well.

Garcia isn’t done! He is 38! that means while he is still a viable player we need to start the replacement.
How bad can it be,an old unprepared Qb or a young trying to get prepared QB? sounds like a toss-up. We WILL have to have a younger player at QB sometime and NOW seems like a good time to start one getting game reps.

The real problem here is Gruden. Everyone has had a bad unloyal backstabbing selfish boss. Well Garcia has his. There is a reason why Farve didn’t sign with us. There is a reason why Tampa Bay has become a graveyard for QB’s (just ask Brad Johnson, Jake Plummer, Tim Rattay, Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski, ect.) Grudens thinks he’s such a genius anyone can run his pitifully over complicated offense. That’s why he has no loyalty to any of his players. Gruden is a better car salesman than he is a coach. He lures good talent in and destroys it. A QB’s bestfriend? Shoot, you can now officially add Jeff’s name to his headstone.

If Griese ends up being the starter for the rest of the season we are done! Griese is not the answer, he hasent taken any team he started for to the playoffs.

hey SUDSU, nice try. do you not remember the interview Farve gave where he said that his agent called him and said that a trade was going to happen that night and Farve told his agent “fine, if it’s going to happen get me to Tampa” and then Farve even said he was surprised when his agent called back saying the Packers took the Jets offer? sa you put it “There is a reason why Farve didn’t sign with us” well there is, its that the Packers wanted too much for Farve and wanted him out of the NFC. keep trying though

Garcia it’s not about YOU & your MASSIVE ego. It’s about TEAM. We saw you “struggle through it” last year. It didn’t work. You haven’t been 100% since your injury. You’re pouting around like some h.s. titty baby ever since you didn’t get a contract extension. You’re under contract. You didn’t play during camp and it showed. You’re not the same QB who came here over a year ago. Griese gives this team the best chance to win NOW. The Bucs can’t afford to lose two or three games, while you “play through it.” Either get ON this team or ask to be traded.

Who cares about that! Garcia is the man took Tampabay bucs to the playoffs! did you all forget that and cares about Massive EGO every team has ONE! Garcia is a QB that will make it happen For Gruden YES he is a hard A** with no BRAINS what so ever but look at this way we have to deal with it So come on bad mouthing isn’t gonna help I know these don’t read this

Monte Kiffin should be a great head coach for the Bucs….maybe even Bill Cowher.

Where are ALL the people that said Garcia,Gruden and Allen will improve this team this year and we should stop “whinning” about it. We didn’t understand football? Do YA’LL understand that loss in New Orleans? Garcia has never won a playoff game! Remember that superbowl year? Garcia eating grass all day in the first round playoff game? He did the same thing to Philly! He is a great back-up! I hate to say I told you so but, I TOLD YOU SO! We deserve a CONSISTANT winner like N.E., Pittsburg, Indianapolis (We miss you Tony),etc! This is THE year to win or sell the team! WE WANT A WINNER!! GO BUCS!!!

Por (SUDS U) on September 11, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Bottomline, Garcia is a proven winner and Gruden is not. With the exception of taking Dungy’s team to the Superbowl, Gruden has done zero since he’s been here and he will do zero again this year. Gruden cannot take critisism especially from his players. Garcia was probably benched because he stated his mind about Grudens mindboggeling play book and questionable play calling. Oh and if you think Garcia is wineing you should reread some of the comments on this site…...

Bucs ball is a RUNNING game. E. Graham 10 carries for 91 yards! 9.1 yards per carry average! Then GRUDEN wants to throw the ball with a qb and wr (i love Galloway!) that didn’t really get their timing down because of injuries. This was a repeat of last years playoff game against the Giants. Can ANYONE see a pattern developing? Superbowl this year? Only the stadium and NOT our team. Is the problem Gruden,Allen,Garcia,Ownership? ALL THE ABOVE! WE DESERVE BETTER!! I said it all off-season and again now. GRUDEN and ALLEN MUST GO!! NOW!! GO BUCS!!!

Eric, Chester PA. Dude get off the site, you have no idea what your talking about. Jeff orchstrated one of the best playoff comebacks in NFL history, remember 49ers/Giants? Oh, do you remember the Eagles/Giants game two years ago? Oh, I forgot to add that he also won the Gray Cup too. Don’t tell me he can’t win a big game. Bill Walsh brought him into the leage because he’s a winner. I would trust Walsh’s judgement before I would trust Grudens that is for sure…..
