Garcia No. 1 In Gruden’s Eyes

Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden all but declared Jeff Garcia the starting quarterback at a Tampa Chamber of Commerce luncheon today.

During a question and answer session with the audience, Gruden mentioned Garcia often as one of the critical pieces of the puzzle to turning things around for the Bucs.

“Right now, Jeff Garcia is clearly the leader in the clubhouse,” Gruden said when addressing the quarterback position.

While Chris Simms has been taking most of the snaps with the first team during the Bucs offseason workouts while Garcia learns the offense, Gruden has been quick to praise Garcia on how quickly he has picked up the system. The next round of OTAs begin on Tuesday and it won’t be a big surprise to see Garcia working mostly with the first team.

Gruden was asked a question about the free agent acquisitions in the offseason, and again Gruden brought up Garcia.

“We have a veteran quarterback now that we think can upgrade us in an area we need to improve,” Gruden said.

Simms wasn’t entirely ignored during the luncheon. Gruden mentioned him while addressing the competition at the quarterback position.

“That’s not to say Chris Simms won’t make things interesting at training camp,” Gruden said.

Ra’Shad: contact me at kurtless@msn.com. I have season tickets for home games and watch away games at different locations. I’m fairly new here and don’t have a particular joint for games. We should start a Bucs group at local bar/eatery.

Im not a big bucs fan but they will be much improved this year with Garcia at qb.  Chris Simms wasnt that good in college and should be backup for the rest of his career.  Hes not horrible but he definitley should not be a started in the nfl.  Garcia will and the bucs d will be enough to keep this team in playoff contention throughout the year.

I really don’t know who will be the best quarterback. Chris Simms has a stronger arm than Jeff, but Jeff can work the west coast offense. Since teams are using two running backs, the bucs should be the first to use the two quarterbacks system. (i.e. Urban Myers and the gators) Hey Kurt in charlotte where do you watch the games?

This is a new season, why live in the past.if you don`t like gruden and the Buc`s go support another team.let the loyal fan`s look forward to the season.the basher`s can read the fishwrap and listen to the radio jerk`s, spread all negative spew with them.  I`AM READY FOR AGREAT 2007 GO BUC`S

So much negative criticism from people who apparently don’t want the Bucs to succeed. We are in a rebuilding stage which started after the Superbowl, and since we didn’t have any draft picks for 2 years afterwards, it really started in 2005. It’s 2007 and things are really looking up. Give Gruden a break. Both of his teams (Raiders/Bucs) went to the Superbowl his first year here and he brought the Lombardi to Tampa, something I had lost all hopes of long ago. Our ownership wants a winner and although Gruden can seem like a mad scientist at times, he’s a pretty damn good football coach. Garcia will serve us well while Grad/McCown develop and our young talent on offense and defense is outstanding. Go Bucs.

Same old same old. The facts are the bucs are a loosing team who won’t pay what they should while lining the owner’s pockets and they have a poor coach who will never even come close to Tony Dungy’s record. Get rid of the team and invite another to take its place.

all i am going to say….is this looks like its going to be a very interesting training camp cause there is alot of postions up for grabs….and for the leader of this team….it has always and will be until he retires and thats #55 MR.DERRICK BROOKS…...GO BUCS

Let’s see..NFC Division playoffs..PA loses to Saints by 3…I think Garcia was the QB huh? PA is west coast and Bucs played west coast in the Super Bowl…Garcia may be the QB to lead the team this year but training camp and the first few games will tell the tale…hang in there Simms. I think Bucs are much improved at many skill positions and youth will be served this and next year, etc. Next year draft a J.G. type WideOut!! GO BUCS!!!!

If Garcia is so great then why didn’t Gruden pull the strings and get him no matter what the cost when he left San Fran.  If he wasn’t good enough to out bid Cleveland what makes him so much better 3 years later, hopefully for Gruden, Garcia turns out to be like fine wine, because no playoffs means no job in Tampa.  P.S. I’d take Testeverde before I’d give Culpepper a chance, he couldn’t help UCF win anymore.

Who cares who the starter is. Unless they bring back the Orange and White, with that handsome man on the helmet, this team will never return to glory!

You people kill me with this not giving Chris Simss a chance crap. When Brand Johnson got benched, who did Gruden go to? Simms. Not Griese. Simss gets hurt and Griese wins job. Next season Griese goes down and who does Gruden go to? Simms. Simms Takes team to playoff and Gruden makes him starter the follow season. What happend? All pre season Simms did not play well. Media said it and Fans said it. First 3 games, Simms played terrible. Media said it, Fans said it. Then Simms got hurt (again). So please explain to me this “Gruden isnt giving Simms a chance” Crap I keep hearing. Keep in mind, I’m a Simms fan. I hope he beats out Garcia for the simple fact that it is good for the team to have 2 good quarterbacks

Posted by  Tim White, Sarasota on 06/08  at  05:27 PM

To Greg Hoffman: When Gruden says that Garcia is the “leader in the clubhouse”, it’s a golf term, meaning “the guy in first place”, NOT the leader of the TEAM, in the clubhouse.  Big difference.

This is why I did not renew my season tickets….Jon Gruden’s pre-occupation with “older” players is going to severely cost us down the road….Chris Simms was never really given a proper chance….his strength is throwing the ball downfield…not short outs….Gruden never gave him a chance….and now his job is on the line and his focus is one season….not building a team

I’ll bet the Philly players were sad to see Garcia go—he was incredible when Donovan was hurt.  He is a winner, and makes few mistakes.  I’d feel much better on game day with him under center than Simms.  Better to have a veteran getting the ball to the young talent around him.

At least we only have one more year (or less) to endure the special genius of Gruden. Now he believes that salvation comes in the form of a 38 year old QB. And he is a genius?? Give me a break. The sooner he departs, the faster we will have a real head coach capable of righting this train wreck.

2 weeks ago Garcia stated he is having a hard time understanding Gruden terminology of the play book.  Are we as Season ticket holder ever going to be told a truth. What is the future of a 37 year quarterback.  Maybe the idea is try to win this year(playoffs) and get a new contract for next year.Youth is the future of this team.  I hope ownership gets involved to the point of dictating what the future will be for the team.

Forget about Garcia proving himself or not.  Let’s talk about Gruden.  If anyone hasn’t proved himself it’s Gruden.

Posted by  Warren Villaren, Waipahu, Hawaii on 06/08  at  02:39 PM

If Garcia is in fact the starting QB for this season I say hooray! I see Simms as a wishy-washy Charlie Brown loser and Bucs should trade him while he has some value. I’d much rather see Daunte Culpepper in Tampa and since Simms likes dolphins so much, send him to Miami. Gruden said changes will be made, well here’s a change he HAS to make. Get rid of Bill Muir! OR raise the bar and expectation level on him w/an ultimatum. BM MUST do a better job of improving the O-line performance or all of the off season moves will be a big waste for this year. Bucs future looks good but that future needs to start right now!

Posted by  Greg Hoffman, Clearwater on 06/08  at  01:38 PM

I think Gruden has clearly lost touch with reality if he thinks Garcia is the leader of the clubhouse. Just because he’s the oldest in the organization doesn’t mean he’s a leader. I doubt a journeyman like Garcia has the full and utmost respect of all the young players, or even some of our other veteran players.

Let’s ask Cadillac Williams who he thinks is the clubhouse leader, then we’ll know for sure.

Should the Bucs pursue Culpepper if he signs for the league minimum. I feel they should work him out and see how he is doing.

You need a good offensive line and then talk about the quaterback getting the job done.  Look at Mark Rypien with the Redskins.  He was only sacked 9 times the year he won the Super Bowl. Or Trent Dilfer with the Ravens[that was an awesome defense].
