TAMPA - Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia has never staged a contract holdout in his life. His first, however, may be right around the corner.
Still unhappy with the progress - or lack thereof - of contract negotiations, Garcia suggested Tuesday that a holdout may be in the offing if the Bucs don’t pony up and meet his demands for an extension.
Poll |
“There might come a time when I might have to stand up,’’ Garcia said. “I hate to do that to jeopardize my teammates because they’re out here, and I don’t want to let them down in any sort of way. But at some point you just want to see the respect from up top.’’
Garcia first made it clear he was unhappy with the status of contract negotiations last month. He is entering the final year of a two-year deal worth $7 million and is believed to be seeking an extension that will bring his total payout to the league average for starters, which is roughly $7 million.
Age is one factor working against Garcia. He will be 39 when the 2009 season begins, so the Bucs are no doubt hesitant to throw a lot of money at him at this time. Garcia, though, is not believed to be asking for a lot of money.
He wants his 2008 payout to match his status as a starter and he wants to recover the seven-figure incentive he would have earned had the team’s decision to rest him down the stretch last year - after it had clinched the NFC South title - not kept him from taking 70 percent of the snaps. Anything short of that almost certainly will leave Garcia an unhappy camper. Or not a camper at all.
And speaking of unhappy campers, Earnest Graham did not attend Tuesday’s voluntary workout either. Graham, who is also embroiled in contract negotiations, has yet to show for a voluntary workout this offseason. He told The Tribune last month that he missed the first round of workouts because of family commitments and planned on attending the second round of workouts.
His absence on Tuesday, however, could be a sign that he too is unhappy with the state of contract talks.
One players who does seem satisfied, at least for now, is Jovan Haye. Haye said Tuesday that he has signed a deal to remain with the Bucs. It is believed that Haye, a restricted free agent, signed a one-year tender worth a little more than $2 million.

garcia deserves a bonus for not having the opportunity to hit some incentives, but not a top dollar contract. 13tds and he wants a new contract. there were some backups who threw more than that.white does not deserve top dollar until hes a starter. maybe a little more money but not top dollar. Lets just hope everyone from now on will just assume starters should make more than the guy backing them up. lets be realistic. according to a lot of you white and graham should be some of the highest paid on the team. These guys were backups last year and may be very well likely this year.

As for the guy saying Greg White didn’t play well and doesn’t deserve to paid either.....r u serious? He wasn’t even the starter and led the team in sacks. He tied a record with 9 forced fumbles. It doesn’t matter where he came from or how he got to be here, you gotta reward guys that put forth 110% and produce results. Time and time again we don’t… and that’s why noone wants to come here when FA roles around.

Have of the posts here aren’t even readable, out of the ones that are...50% are so full of slander and nonsense, they are a waste of time to even read.
Bottom line is Gargia is our starter, yet he is being paid about half the league average for starting QBs. If we expect him to give 100% this year, we should pay the man a starters salary. It wasn’t his bonehead idea to sit him for the last 3 games last year either, so I get why he’s upset about not getting his bonus. I’d feel screwed over as well. Garcia is are best bet for the next year or two. Either draft a first round QB or pony up and pay these old guys starter money. It’s really that simple.

Paul, Garcia has to have someone to throw to when the other team is doubled
up on Galloway. Thats why you see him like that.

If Garcia was the best qb on the team, then maybe. Not only that, Garcia won’t last three games next season. Technically, he’s not a real qb either. He’s some dude who runs around looking frantically for someone to throw to.
Bottom line: Jeff Garcia isn’t a hair on Brian Griese’s ass.

I’m surprised to see anyone supporting Jeff’s demands for more money, or as he calls it “respect” Does he read the papers or listen to the news about the economy? He’s suffering with his millions while the rest of us are scrapping by on our salaries to make ends meet? How many of us would complain about making a few million a year and work only part of the year? We need more players like Dunn - he gives back so much into the community with his money. AND he signed the contract so stick with it and show your respect to the team. Why do these players sit out for more money when they signed the contract that makes them millions already? Believe me, if I was paid that much money I would happily show up to work and do what the boss wanted.

...and another thing: the team didn’t decide to rest Garcia; he was injured because he made a boneheaded decision to go head first on the second fu@k!ng play of the game! Why would we pay even more to an over-the-hill nimwit who doesn’t know to slide when scrambling? QB101! You missed your incentives because you made a stupid error; not the Bucs organization. Had you made it through that game, you would have reached all your incentives. Think about that Garcia before opening your mouth and proving your ignorance!

Premadonna BS. Thanks Jeff for having an OK season (although you did lose the JAX game for us) and didn’t play particularly well in the playoff loss, and turning it into an offseason debacle. But hey, who’s taking note right? Allen’s father is the 3rd or 4th highest winning % coach in pro football history; he may know a little something about your talent (or lack thereof.) There may be more to the Greise signing than was first gleaned. Take the money that you barely earned, as the O-line and Graham did most the work and stop acting like the front office owes you “respect.” That’s a bunch of horse$#!t; I bet your checks come in the mail on time, every time! Get to work before you lose your job to Greise!

Why do the players that have good years always want to hold out in any sport? They are the ones who agreed on the contract. What if they owner’s started locking these guys out until they took less money after a bad season?

Greg, where’s Chine? And why would you think that I am against capitalism? This has nothing to do with capitalism. This has to do with Garcia playing out his contract for what he agreed to make. He knew what he was making for when he signed his name on the dotted line. And my thought is, if didn’t like the money being offered, he didn’t have to sign. If he thought he could make more money elsewhere, I’m sure he would have. How much was his contract in Philly worth? How much did he milk Detroit and Cleveland for?
Posted by Greg M, Tampa, FL on 05/14 at 10:11 AM
Mitch, if you don’t like the fact that football players make a lot of money then move to Chine, Cuba or North Korea because like it or not here in this country the free market decides salaries - yeah capitalism!
Oh, and if I was getting paid half of what my colleagues were getting paid you’re damn right I’d go looking for a raise.

And Greg, one more thing, playing in the NFL is a privilege and playing for a franchise like TB is an added bonus due to the weather, cost of living and lack of state income tax (which saves these players a ton of money each year). So I don’t think we have to worry about players not wanting to come here.

Bruce Allen is putting himself into a bad position. If he doesn’t renegotiate some of these contracts, the team will suffer. There are too many piling up not to act on some of them. But now that he has waited until they are publically complaining, if he renegotiates, it will send the signal to others that all they have to do is complain and that will get action. In the future, these things should get taken care of well before they get to this stage.

Greg, BigBucsFan is a General Contractor. If he gets hurt on his next job, where do you think his next paycheck is going to come from? Millions of Americans go to work each day not knowing what would happen if they get layed off tomorrow or how they are going to put food on the table. These pro football players are making a killing and then asking for pity because their job is unsecure from season to season. But in the meantime, they are making a minimum of $300,000 a year. If they blow out a knee or get hurt, tell them to fall back on that (free) college education and make ends meat like the rest of us. Don’t tell Bruce Allen to gave away millions just because we are under the cap. That’s just stupid.

Greg, You are correct, a team can cut you at a moments notice, but if you are a valuable asset (as Garcia is), you will not get cut. Look around, the people getting cut are those players who make a tremendous amount of money and who can no longer perform up to those standards. That’s the problem with NFL contracts, but it’s something that the players association agreed to. I will not feel bad for a player who’s making $3.5 million dollars and is worried how he is going to make ends meat if he is cut. I can pretty much guarantee that out of the 70,000 people attending bucs games, the lowest paid player makes more than 69,900 of them. Don’t feel bad for them, cause they don’t feel bad for you.

Mitch, I understand the way the collective bargaining agreement is set up but other than that why should players feel the need to honor a contract in the NFL when the team doesn’t have to honor that contract and can basically cut the player at any time. Seriously if you want players to keep coming to Tampa you need to treat them properly.

I wonder how Doug Williams would do as our GM. Just a thought. The rookie salaries are what has started this whole salary imbalance to begin with, and Allen supports that Structure or lack there of. Whatever happened to the “old knock on your boss’s door and talk about your worth and ask for a raise or bonus”. All players and employees are replaceable in any business. Urlacher is another one. His gripe is he’s not the highest paid on the team. I think all of these spoiled brats could take a lesson from Derrick Brooks. He is the man and always sets the example in all aspects of life. Go Bucs !!!

Greg M, that is the stupidist reasons why we should pay Garcia.
Dan, Don’t try to figure out Kinzer, he’s a moron.
Dex, you are right on the money.
Jason, if Garcia didn’t want to play for the money, he shouldn’t have signed a contract with us last year. He’s 39 and odds are, he’s not going to play 16 games for us.
Barry O, you’re an idiot.
People listen, Garcia is under contract, a contract he signed. He needs to honor that contract and play. If he doesn’t, F him.

You people who advocate shelling out extra money, just because we are under the cap should have your heads examined. Have any of you ever heard of fiscal responsibility? Do any of you think, in a million years that Garcia would pay back any money if he had performed poorly? Is Simms giving his money back because he didn’t even suit up for 1 game? Garcia signed a deal and his play was exactly what we were expecting. He was steady and made plays and got us to the playoffs, but THAT’S WHAT HE WAS GETTING PAID TO DO! You can’t just decide to want more money, just because you had a good year and the Bucs shouldn’t have to pay.

There, there, Jeffy...is it nap time??
What a freakin’ cry baby!!! look at his stats, for pete’s sake!!

Jeff Garcia needs to remind himself that two years ago he was a 3rd string QB playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s lucky he landed in Tampa and is getting paid 5 mil a year at his age. How many other 39 year old QB’s are getting paid 5 mil a year??

what a crock. did anyone watch that video. he is complaining that the players put their bodies on the line and now he wants the team to put something on the line. How about the fact that the team gave you a 2 year 7 million dollar contract last year. you would have made every cent of that contract if you never saw the field anyway. that seems to me like the team putting something on the line.

Maybe we can steal WR Joe Horn from Atlanta. He seems to be unhappy there.
And why don’t we find out if Brett Favre wants to play? I think he still wants to. It doen’t hurt to ask. He lives right around the corner.

Hey Allen---why don’t you screw over galloway too and take some of his money away from him so he can hold out also...then all three of our many (LOL) offensive weapons won’t be available---oh wait, Garcia, galloway and Graham are our only offensive weapons i almost forgot....we are still waiting for that “tiger woods” type of impact player you promised us....

There are no victims in life once you’re an adult. Only those who chose to be. For years Garcia has chosen to chase NFL money all around the league, as opposed to always finding a good situation on a team where he fits in. It’s why he didn’t join Gruden years ago. Someone else had a better deal somewhere.
What has changed? He’s lucked into a good situation in an offense that fits his skills, but it’s not about winning a Super Bowl in his waining years. It’s still about the mula. New team, but nothing’s changed. Sorry Jeff, but I have no sympathy for someone with no desire for winning. Maybe you should sue people for a living. I hear it’s very lucrative.
