Feeling better but still not well enough to throw a football, Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia said he’s still not sure he’ll be able to play Sunday when the Bucs take on the Saints in a critical NFC South matchup in New Orleans.
“I’m feeling a little better today; I’m taking some better steps today than yesterday, [but] I’m not at a point now where I can even throw the ball yet,’’ Garcia said during his weekly radio call-in segment on WDAE, 620 AM.
When asked whether he would be able to play Sunday, Garcia said, “I still can’t say that. I hope to be out there and do my thing, but that’s going to be coach’s decision.
“I was definitely feeling a lot better today when I woke up this morning. That was a positive sign right there, but I’m not going to put the organization or myself in a bad situation if I can’t move.’‘
Garcia said he is still receiving treatments on his back, which he injured during the first play of the Bucs’ game Sunday against Washington at Raymond James Stadium.
Garcia returned late in the game but was ineffective. He said he does not believe he’ll be ready to practice on Wednesday, so it appears the Bucs will spend the week preparing a reserve to start.
Bucs coach Jon Gruden refused to say Monday whether he would start second-year pro Bruce Gradkowski or fourth-year pro Luke McCown should Garcia be unable to start.
Gradkowski replaced Garcia on Sunday but was ineffective.

Truthfully all we need is somebody that can hit a couple downfield because that will open up the underneath passing as well the running game. You know the Saints will be pressing the line of scrimmage so if we can hit one or two intermediate to long range passes we’ll be okay. Honestly that person doesn’t appear to be Gradkowski so let’s give Luke a shot and see what he can do…

It appears most Buc fans agree that McGown is a better choice than Gradkowski. Game experience hasn’t improved Gradkowski’s ability to read a blitz, while trying not to turn the ball over, he waits too long instead of throwing the ball away resulting in a sack. I said before, both are green, but McGown has the better arm, is quicker in a roll out. New Orleans will be stacking the line so put in the tight ends and pound the ball or drop the dime on them with Galloway.
