SOUTH BEND, Ind. USF opens the 2011 season today at No. 16 Notre Dame, and plenty of coverage from today’s Tampa Tribune on the matchup.
First, though, there is an update from the Tribune’s Joey Johnston on Lee Roy Selmon, who is now showing signs of improvement after suffering a stroke at his home Friday in Tampa. Selmon is one of the most respected individuals in the Tampa Bay community, and he played an integral role in bringing football to USF.
USF coach Skip Holtz makes his return today to Notre Dame Stadium for the first time since watching his father’s final game as head coach of the Fighting Irish in 1996. South Bend is certainly a special place for Holtz and his family.
The Bulls have earned key nonconference victories on the road each of the last four years, and those experiences in hostile venues should help them avoid being intimidated at tradition-rich Notre Dame. And today offers a great stage for USF to make more history.
And, just in case you missed it, here is a story regarding Holtz’s relationship with Dan Ruettiger, better known as Rudy.
There will be plenty of coverage from today’s game between the Bulls and Fighting Irish. You can follow @TBO_USFBulls on Twitter for live updates, and quarter-by-quarter recaps will be posted here on the blog.
