Gaither senior defensive end Mikhail Reece (6-foot-5, 245 pounds) has accepted an admissions offer into Yale University while teammate Tyler McCollum (6-1, 175), a defensive back, has accepted a scholarship offer from another standout academic institution, Colgate, Cowboys coach Jason Stokes announced Monday.
McCollum finished the season with 52 tackles and 5 interceptions en route to the Cowboys’ appearance in the Class 7A regional finals against Lakeland. Reece had 83 tackles, 5.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries as a key member of that Gaither (9-4) defense.
As an Ivy League school, Yale cannot offer athletic scholarships and can only provide academic assistance. Colgate football, however, competes within the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), is a member of the Patriot League and can offer athletic scholarships as well as academic aid.
