Gaither’s American Legion A and B squads each came up short in their respective quests to win a state baseball title.
The B team, which had advanced to the state tournament in Bradenton, lost its first two games at the event and was eliminated. The A squad, playing the Central/Southwest Area tournament in Bradenton with a berth in the state tournament in Fort Pierce on the line, advanced to the finals but fell to Bradenton Post 24.
“We had a good summer,” Cowboys coach Frank Permuy said. “We played pretty well, we gained some experience; it was a fun summer.”
In other news, Gaither’s home park, Cowboy Field, was named the top venue for District 3 (which covers Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee) by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association. Cowboy Field, as well as assistant coach Nelson North, are up for national award, which will be announced at the annual coaches convention in December.
