Fuld to host Diabetes Sports Camp at USF on Feb. 3 and 4

Sam Fuld, in partnership with the Rays, the University of South Florida Diabetes Center and USF Athletics, and Florida Diabetes Camps will host the Inaugural Sam Fuld Diabetes Sports Camp at USF on Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4.

Fuld, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 10, will be one of the camp’s nine instructors from the college or professional level―all of whom have type 1 diabetes.  Instruction will be provided in baseball/softball, basketball, football, soccer, tennis and cheerleading. 

The camp is open to all type 1 diabetes patients from ages eight to 18.  Campers may register online at   usfdiabetescenter.org.  The $70 registration fee includes a camp T-shirt, diabetes supplies, dinner and bowling on Friday, and lunch and snacks on Saturday.

“This camp will provide a great experience for type 1 diabetic kids from all over the state of Florida and from all over the United States,” said Fuld.  “It will give them the chance to share stories with other diabetic kids, learn how to deal with being a diabetic athlete and gain inspiration from peers and coaches.  Counselors from the six sports being offered are all type 1 diabetics themselves, and each has college or professional experience in their respective sports.  I’m confident the camp will be an amazing event, and I’m excited to make it an annual tradition in the Tampa Bay area.”

Instructors at the camp include Tampa native and former tennis professional Genevieve King; former University of Florida and Indianapolis Colts wide receiver and three-time track and field All American Stacey Simmons; tennis professional Michael Findlings; former professional basketball player in Germany Lew Finnegan; former Nova Southeastern University basketball player Chad Bobik; former Jesuit High School baseball and football star David Ochotorena; current catcher for FIU’s softball team, Jenny Welch; and walk-on kicker and soccer goalie at USF, Renato Proia.

The camp will be held at the USF Athletic District located at 11899 Bull Run Dr. in Tampa.  Medical supervision will be provided by staff members from the USF Diabetes Center.  For more information on the camp, call (352) 334-1321.
