BALTIMORE Sam Fuld, the Rays best pinch-hitter, may find himself sitting next to Kyle Farnsworth in the trainers room during this crucial three-game series against the Red Sox, which begins tonight in Boston.
Fuld strained a tendon in his right wrist while swinging through a curveball for the third strike of his second at-bat during Wednesday’s 6-2 loss to the Orioles.
“It’s kind of a weird thing. It never had it happened before on the extension,” Fuld said as he tried to mimic his extension then stopped because the pain was too much.
Fuld left the game after the fourth inning and was examined by head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield, who Fuld said told him it was a strain.
“He said he’s seen it a few times,” Fuld said. “They X-rayed it, and X-rays were fine.”
Fuld was in the lineup Wednesday, playing in place of left fielder Desmond Jennings. Rays manager Joe Maddon said he wanted to give Jennings a day off so he would be well-rested for this Red Sox series. Also, Maddon said to keep Fuld sharp as a pinch-hitter, in which Fuld has six hits in 15 pinch-hit at-bats, he needs to get some at-bats.
Now, Fuld might not be available for to play against the Red Sox.
“I asked him what are we looking at, and he said we’ll have to play it be ear, day-to-day,” Fuld said.
