FSU’s Rock Bottom Remains Uncertain

Many believe Florida State hit rock bottom by losing to Boston College on Saturday. You know what’s so scary? That might not be the case.

Florida State has only two games left on the schedule that it should definitely win, Virginia and Western Michigan. Both games are at home. Of course, these days we can’t really say for sure that FSU will beat anybody. The Seminoles are decimated by injuries on defense. The play-calling is often suspect and quarterback Drew Weatherford continues to make some costly errors at bad times as evidenced by his second-quarter interception against BC.

So, rock bottom could mean something different this season. If FSU doesn’t come out Saturday at Maryland and establish an early lead, don’t expect the ‘Noles to win. They also have little chance to beat Florida at home next month unless the Gators start losing players at the rate FSU has this season.

So, let’s say the ‘Noles finish 7-5 and go to a lower tier bowl game and win. Well, 8-5 this year isn’t the same as 8-5 and ACC champions like a season ago. So, expect some changes—most likely on the offensive coaching staff—if that scenario plays out.

About the only way FSU can remain status quo going into next season is if it wins out. OK, back to reality. That’s not going to happen, so the next few months should be very interesting around Doak Campbell Stadium.

6-6 is a realistic possibility considering the way FSU is playing. The mystique is gone. I only hope we don’t blue chip recruits because of the downfall. At this point I would not recommend any offensive recruits go there until there is a change in the OC. Bobby needs to start coaching and stop being a spectator.

Okay ... let’s shift the conversation a little: The copy above talks about FSU finishing 7-5, which assumed wins ws. MD, UVa and W. Mich. Using the same thoughts, the ‘Noles now optimistically looking at 6-5 going into the UF game (forgetting the fact that UVa just beat NC St.) ... which very well will be the last game of the season for FSU (doesn’t “travel well” to non-championship bowls, and teams in decline draw poorly—there is the chance FSU will not go to a bowl if even eligible.) Would this scenario increase FSU’s chances vs. UF as a strict spoiler? or are we really looking at 6-6 being best-case scenario?

I agree with Joe! Mark Richt was the best OC FSU had. The past five years have been unbearable. I saw CJ Spiller play in high school and he was awesome. Too bad FSU didn’t sign his brother. That is why he chose Clemson over FSU because they did give him a scholarship. Now that Lee has played a full game. He looks like a better fit than Weatherford. Go “X”.

Ronnie ... you just don’t get it, do you? Yes, Bowden could have fired Richt, or even Brad Scott before him ... but NEITHER were ever close to this bad. The injuries you speak of are on defense, yet it is the offense that has cost us almost every loss in the last 5 years. Sure, some have been “close,” but outside of ranked BC, most have not been strong opponents. Have any more excuses for the worst FSU team in 30 years?

you need to learn to take all the bad thats happening, and think about all the good.just think of how many times coach bowden could have fired coach mark richt, but he didnt he made him the coach he is today.fsu will be back on top,how many times has coach bowden won against all odds.his team is hurt up right now,and he still almost beat bc.fsu has to many injuries its not the coaching.just hold on and go through this bad stretch, coach bowden will right the ship.he will not retire,or fire any coach thats not coach bowden!

Ronnie—your comments are perplexing. Sure Bobby is an icon ... but the team (offense) has been in CLEAR decline for 5 years, and NOTHING has been done. It is insanity to think that suddenly the offense will become effective, imaginitive, strategic, or even just mediocre. And now that FSU has a 5 year history of turning can’t-miss high schoolers into undrafted also-rans, expect to see a lot more stories like CJ Spiller (grew up a huge ‘Nole fan, but is now a Clemson Tiger and one of the top rushers in the nation). Even Paterno booted his offensive and recruiting coordinators before his recent turnaround.

I’ve been a Bobby fan since the day he came to FSU, but I think it’s time for him to become Coach Emeritus (without any other Bowdens on the coaching staff). I’ve heard Ron Zook may be looking for a job soon.

coach bowden should not retire, and i hope he does not fire anyone.all these people are mad,but they need to stop and think, hes the greatest coach of all,and by the way who would replace him god!coach bowden should close his team from all media outlets, until the can figure out what it will take to get back to fsu football.you cant make southern icon retire, hes the best thing to ever happen to college football, and he will right the ship!
