DALLAS Andrew Friedman spent Tuesday talking with representatives of the free agents and general managers as he continued his search for offensive help.
“We refined it a little bit,” Friedman said. “I wouldn’t say that there’s been significant momentum in the last 24 hours, but we have a decent feel for various things that we might be able to do.”
Friedman said the possibility of a trade or signing taken place this week during the Winter Meetings was remote.
“I kind of approach these meetings to gather information and further things along not necessarily to get to an end point,” he said. “So I think we will have gathered really important information for our offseason. Whether that manifests itself in a trade or signing over the next two days, I’m not sure. But we definitely made some progress on some fronts in terms of having a better understanding of the landscaping.”
The Rays signed four players to minor league contracts with invites to spring training. Of the four, first baseman Juan Miranda seems to have the best chance to contribute to the team in 2012. The left-handed hitting power hitter spent time at the major league level with both the Yankees and Diamondbacks.
“He’s got some real carrying strengths that give him a chance to be a real productive major league player,” Friedman said. “Obviously the standard at that position is higher than at other position, but he has extreme power and will either compete for a job depending on how the rest of the winter shakes out or be very high on depth chart in the event of injury.”
Friedman also said the Rays will scout former Tiger pitcher Joel Zumaya, who will pitch next week in front of scouts.
