Freshman Davis has place in USF record book

Andre Davis has played in just two games, but the freshman receiver has already managed to work his way into USF’s record book.

Davis, a local product of Jefferson High, became the first true freshman to score a touchdown on both offense and special teams in the same game – and just the second player in program history to do so – during a 70-17 rout of Florida A&M on Saturday night.

Davis hauled in a 27-yard scoring pass from junior quarterback B.J. Daniels in the second quarter, then blocked a punt, recovered the loose ball and returned it 11 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. The only other player to score an offensive and special teams touchdown in the same game is DeAndrew Rubin, who had two touchdown receptions, one going for a 95-yard score, and a 55-yard punt return as a senior in a 2002 game against Northern Illinois.

Davis was one of two USF players to make the Big East’s weekly honor roll for Week 3, joining junior running back Darrell Scott, who had his own record-breaking night while amassing 230 total yards of offense and four touchdowns.

Scott became the first player in program history to have a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown of 50 yards or more in the same season, accomplishing the feat in the second quarter along with a 56-yard scoring run and an 84-yard scoring reception.

Scott also tied the program mark for most rushing/receiving touchdowns in a single game, and tied the program’s third-best single game mark for combined rushing/receiving yards.
