Hillsborough County:

Freedom Coach Unhappy With Team’s Perception

Freedom football coach Marquel Blackwell said Monday he is unhappy with the perception his team is receiving regarding Friday’s brawl at Tampa Bay Tech. In the first quarter, after a Tech player was tackled out of bounds near the Tech bench, brawl ensued which resulted in six Freedom players, three Tech players and a Tech JV coach being ejected.

Tech went on to win 19-0 and improved to 4-0 while Freedom fell to 0-3.

Blackwell said the game was “ugly” and that the brawl “was embarrassing”.

“When you look at it and it says eight Freedom players, what’s the perception of that?” Blackwell said. “We don’t preach that.”

Blackwell said he hasn’t heard anything from the Florida High School Athletic Association regarding suspensions, but is confident his players will be perceived in a different light once the truth comes out. He said the evidence is on the game film.

“I’m confident (Hillsborough County Athletic Director ) Lanness (Robinson) will get it straight,” Blackwell said.

Blackwell would not comment any further.

Jordan, speak 4 urself and stop blaming all the players! Many of us are talented and doing everything that the coaches ask of us.I am disappointed yes,but I keep my mouth shut and don’t point fingers.Could u be a loyal teammate and do the same!We need to put our energy into trying to score. And ultimately win a game.

Dear Joan,

Sorry it took a while to get back to you with my real response. I was on Dr.
Phil getting my “issues” taken care of.
Well, Well, you give the impression you’re such a good christian talking about who am I to judge while, on the other hand, you call me bitter, angry,
and have issues. Jesus said to beware
of hipocrites(Joan). I forgot more about coaching football than Marquel and Bartel’s Puppets will ever know.
Joan, so that makes me qualified to
judge I won a lot of games Marquel is
still looking for one win. By the way
how are you related and what is the
fundraiser for the fines? I think Marquel and his clowns should go in a dunk tank ther will be a long line.

Dear Joan,

Thanks for keeping me on the prayer list however, Marquel and the team
need prayers not to mention a Miracle.
I am angry that Bartels let this program fall so far after Brock&Co did a great job. By the way this athletic
program isn’t in the same league as Plant,Armwood, and Wharton. The only thing holding the program back is this admin. 3 AD’s in 2 years is horrible. Bartels should put the same emphasis on athletics as academics. There are plenty of schools that have both. Are you related to a coach or player? What fundraiser is coming up to pay the fines?

If Blackwell thought the fight with TBT was “ugly and embarrassing”, what does he think of getting beat 41-0 by Alonso? Outscored 122-6 so far this year and you’ll blame it on the kids? No kids are that bad, just mismanaged. With the Bulls playing at the same time, I’m surprised the coaching staff even showed up…figured they’d be at a keg party. Blackwell, Feel free to resign before this week against Hillsborough, anyone can coach up zero offense.

Lar G.Johnson, who are you to judge?  You sound like a bitter and angry person.  Don’t you have anything better to do?  Move on and get over it.  You seem like a negative person or someone with prior issues.  I’ll keep you on my prayer list.

anguage? You can have exellent hearing when you listen to our coaches but then again you are oblivious to your child’s language. Come on now this is really childish. All in all, don’t judge my coaches or my team because of your negative foolish beliefs. They are doing everything possible. The problem is we as players aren’t getting it done. P.S. We are not going 0-10.

not basketball, where one player (like Kobe) can dominate and the team will win. So no, we dont need Patchan. Would he be an asset to our team? Yes, of course. But we don’t need him, as you can see when he left, our program continued. And truthfully, many kids quit because they are soft/weak. They can’t deal with some coaches who want us to become great and go to the next level and not make the same mistakes they did (that’s why they are so tough on us). Back to my point, if their

protect their little “babies” and blame it on the coaching staff. Its time to grown up, and stop babying your children. We dont have the talent that we had last year obviously. Everyone on or around the team knows that. We lost many key seniors last year. Plus our jv team last year went 4-2 because we were hard workers and the teams we played were horrible. We didnt have the talent then either. As soon as we played a team that had any lick of talent we lost. Is it Blackwell"s fault that we lost our great seniors too? We are a young team and this year will mainly be for rebuilding (sorry seniors). Also, we dont need anyone. Football is

I play for freedom varsity football. I have first-hand experience with all these coaches. Coach Blackwell may be inexperienced but he is a football mastermind. Everyone has to start somewhere. But because he doesnt coach up to your standards or call plays the way you want doesnt mean he’s not a good coach (thats why he’s the coach and you are not).  Also these coaches are the best coaches freedom has seen yet. Have you stopped to think once that maybe our team isnt successful because of the players? Nope, because everyone wants to

Mr Henderson there are plenty of hardworking coaches but only winning and losing counts at the 5A level. If winning doesn’t matter then they wouldn’t keep score. It is time to get rid of the Michael Vick wannabe and the rest of his thig staff. They lost
control of their team and embarrased the school and the program. Don’t worry freedom fans every team gets better after Marquel leaves. Who goes
0-10 first ND or freedom. Bartels can
Blackwell.

Notre Dame has outscored someone!!Go Irish! Thank-you Blackwell.

It is time to admit a mistake was made in Blackwell’s hiring. His inexperience was overlooked- now judge ‘em since he has been the head coach and the results have been miserable! He absolutely has taken a promising playoff team and ruined them. His presence had zero 2 do with what Stegman and his men worked hard to build.I really don’t see why anyone was ever fooled by Blackwell’s lack of credentials. After all-All he ever did was run up numbers as a college QB against mostly DII and DIII schools. It don’t make u a Head coach. The proof is in the puddin’. Freedom should be taking the next step-winning District. Instead they can only muster six points and six suspensions at this point! Admit your error Richard Bartels.

Sorry to disagree with most of you but Marquel Blackwell is a very smart and hard working coach.  I played football with him at USF and beleive he he knows what hes doing… that being said he is also a young coach and football is one of the toughest games around to manage not to mention this is one of the toughest districts in the state of florida ... Blackwell lost a ton of really good seniors last year and has rebuilding to do… give him a chance befor you pass judgment on him… i saw the tape TBT started the whole thing and that JV coach that got ejected should be the one to resign not Blackwell

Freedomfan is probably his girl friend. Brock &co were real coaches.
Marquel had 9 chances inside the 10 to score and couldn’t score sound familiar? Every school(High and college) wanted Patchan except Freedom. Marquel said he didn’t need him on offense. Well, when Patchan is in the NFL and Marquel is pumping gas Patchan can say he didn’t need Marquel. Marquel is arrogant and stupid. After watching his preseason interview I wonder if he went to classes? Marquel go back to school and go to classes this time.

Freedom Fan- you are dilusional. First,No doubt the kids work hard, they are the best kids in the county, and deserve better. What does working hard have to do with incompetent coaching? There is maybe 4 years experience among the varsity coaches. Ask yourself why fresh and sophs are playing - because everyone else quit! He was only credited with last years turnaround by people who didn’t have a clue;Probably the same that made him coach. So while you cheer on your coach and go 0-10,cherry picking the JV just to do so, enjoy Freedom football. Meanwhile, Maybe his AP girlfriend that voted him into the job can help coach next season.

Coach Blackwell, his staff, and players have worked extremely hard to build a solid football program. His team is young, starting many freshmen and sophomores, and has a bright future. Blackwell is credited for turning Freedom’s season around last year after joining the staff midway through the year as the offensive coordinator. He had a talented group and proved he could coach and will certainly do the same for his young team now. Anyone associated w/ the program knows how dedicated he is, that the kids respect him, and they are headed in the right direction. Keep up the hard work guys.

Its truth, not perception. You’re known as the “PS2 staff” because you coach like a video game. They practiced for 8 hours a day during the summer, use the “F” word at kids like water.Bartells and parents of Freedom that wanted “name recognition” you got it, but the kids deserve better. The best thing Blackwell could do for the program is resign and take his laughable group of foul mouth clowns with you. How can a program that went 6-5 and the playoffs last year with rising JV players that have went 6-0 and 4-2 as 9th and 10th graders go 0-10 in the varsity program? It’s called hiring inexperienced coaches. Make the deal Blackwell- go 0-10 and resign so we can move forward at Freedom. What will it take, a sideline shooting?
