And then there was one. Former coach Fran Fraschilla has withdrawn his name for consideration for the University of South Florida job, ESPN.com reported. Fraschilla had previously interviewed with USF AD Doug Woolard.
Of the four candidates that have interviewed with Woolard, three have withdrawn - Winthrop’s Gregg Marshall, South Alabama’s John Pelphrey and Fraschilla. Former Virginia coach Pete Gillen is the only one who hasn’t officially withdrawn.
ESPN’s Andy Katz reported that “Fraschilla was the choice for the Bulls after Winthrop’s Gregg Marshall withdrew his name Sunday. ... But Tuesday afternoon, Fraschilla pulled his name out. USF has one choice left from its original list—former Virginia coach Pete Gillen. That means USF might look at former Arkansas coach Stan Heath, who has support in the Big East.”
Heath told the Tampa Tribune Monday night he was interested in learning more about the USF job, but had not been contacted by USF.

Sign STAN THE MAN Today. Great fit and no one else is out there. Get it done so at least we can get a mention during the final four this weekend

If I were a conspiracy theorist (which I’m not), I’d swear that there were someone out there warning these guys off of the USF job.
Suggest removalWhat else could it be? If it’s the practice facilities, surely the Big East money will soon pay for a makeover. Is there something rotten in the administration?

We need a Jim Leavitt clone to build from the ground up! No wonder so many coaches don’t want to come here with no tradition or a winning program. Good luck Bulls, you need to find someone hungry to win, stick with them and let them recruit as the program evolves.

Gregg Marshall and John Pelphrey are young, highly sought-after guys who will have other shots at the brass ring. All their actions say is that USF is a very difficult place to win, but we already knew that.
As for Fran Fraschilla, the list of major-conference schools waiting to hire him as a head coach is not a long one. I suspect Doug Woolard told Fraschilla he wasn’t going to get the job, so he “withdrew.” Or maybe he just decided he likes doing TV better. It wouldn’t be the first time: he agreed to become an assistant at Marquette a couple years ago, but backed out at the last minute. So let’s not read too much in here.

As a USF alum I am hoping we hire Stan Heath. He is coming off a 20 win season with no seniors. He has consistently recruited top talent (recruiting classes have been in the top 20 nationally). Also, he took Kent State to the Elite 8 in the one year he there.
Suggest removalOf course this is assuming he would still be interested in the job after he learns that the basketball team does not have its own practice facility.

After viewing the live interview between 4029TV.com and Stan Heath. I think USF has a chance of recruiting him. U Ark. bought out his remaining 3 yr. contract for $900,000. USF may have to come up with similar figures or better. After coaching at UA for 5 yrs he elevated the program to back to back 20+ winning seasons, NCAA playoffs and had an average 14,900 attendance which increased to 16,000 this season. Go Bulls.

Stephen, I think you’re on to something there. To be honest with & everyone else on this pannel why am I not suprise that Fran turn down the the job. If you ask me that’s the 64 billion dollar question.

Have USF officals contacted the 8th grade coach from Ohio who applied ?

Don’t think the lack of a practice facility will keep an interested coach from coming to South Florida.
I would think there are plans are to improve the basketball program’s facilities. Woolard only has to point to the football program as to the athletic department’s progress.
Leavitt was able to accomplish quite a bit with NOTHING to start with. Basketball is easier. Only a couple top players are needed (unlike football).
I am thinking there are things going on behind the scenes (hoping this as well) with talks to possible head coaches we are not aware of. Usually the guy that gets hired isn’t even mentioned until just days before the hiring.
I do hope the former Arkansas coach gets an interview

I think Pink Floyd said it best, Money, Money, Money…
Hopefully they will put out for Stan so we can all belly up to the Heath Bar.

No, the eighth grade coach from Ohio removed his name from consideration.

I will make it very simple for USF, alumni, and boosters (do those exist?) - some one get into Doug Woolard’s ear and make him hire Stan Heath. Heath is a young, up and coming, intelligent coaching stud! Do whatever it takes. USF, Tampa, the state of Florida, and the Big East will be very happy about that decision.

Brett,
Suggest removalDo you know what the budget is for this coaching search? Can we afford a Heath? Shoot can we even afford a Pelphrey or Marshall?
Por (Brett McMurphy) on March 28, 2007 (Suggest removal)
Claudel, by budget, I think you mean, how much will they pay the next coach? Marshall and Woolard discussed a six-year, $750,000 a year deal. Can USF afford Heath? I think it depends on how much Heath would want.
Suggest removalPor (Claudel Olivier) on March 29, 2007 (Suggest removal)
750K a year is more than the total compensation package Heath was getting at Arkansas (712K I believe), so that puts us in the running! We need this guy badly!
