Fourth of July game highlights Rowdies’ inaugural schedule

A Fourth of July game at Steinbrenner Field against in-state rival FC Miami highlights the FC Tampa Bay Rowdies’ inaugural schedule, released by the U.S. Soccer Federation on Monday afternoon.

“That’s the one that stands out, isn’t it?” Rowdies head coach Paul Dalglish said. “I know it’s a tradition here to make a big deal of the Fourth of July game with the Rowdies, and we want to keep that going.”

The Rowdies will open and close the 30-game schedule against the same opponent, Crystal Palace Baltimore, with the Rowdies travelling to open the season on April 16, the second weekend of the season. The Rowdies will play their first regular season game at Steinbrenner Field on May 8 against the Austin Aztex.

“It’s going to be brilliant,” Dalglish said. “The first home game of our inaugural season is going to be exciting, and hopefully we can put some good performances in the first three games on the road and have people be excited to come and watch the team.”

Six of the Rowdies first nine games will be on the road, but the Rowdies will have a chance to make hay at home with a four-game stand at Steinbrenner Field coming in July and a three-game stand in August allowing for an opportunity to make a playoff push in front of home fans.

“The fact that we’ve got a lot of home games in the second half of the season is an advantage,” Dalglish said. “But it’s important we win the games in the other part of the season to build confidence going into these home games.”

Eight teams of the 12 will advance to the playoffs, with the top team in each conference gaining the No.1 or No.2 seed and the remaining six positions being determined by point. The playoffs will begin the week of October 4, with each round being contested over a home-and-home series, the winner being determined by total aggregate goals.

The league’s championship match will be contested the same way, instead of a single championship game.

Two things: How happy are you with the schedule? I think the Rowdies have done pretty well here, while they have to start the season with three road games, they get some good homestands in including four-straight in the middle of July and another three straight in August. The Fourth of July game against Miami could be epic.

Second, what do you think of the home-and-home playoff format including the championship game? I like the idea for the quarterfinals and semifinals, but I think a straight final, like the UEFA Champions League, would offer a little more drama, and make the game feel like more of an event.

Great quotes from Dalglish! I think that the away games to start the season was probably done to make sure the stadium was set for the start of the season. While more games in the second half can be a good thing, Tampa is a city of fair-weather fans for the most part. If they enter the home opener 0-3, that may not bode well for a good turn out. I think the July 4th game is a great idea and something a lot of people are excited for. I agree with you that the championship should be a straight final on neutral turf. Home-away is the way USL did it, but it’s so confusing for American fans. It took me a while to learn what the away goals rule meant.

I like the schedule just hope we start the home-opener with a 3-0 winning streak.

I like the home and home playoff format with aggregate goal determining the champion at this time. First, it allows the fans that have been following and supporting the teams to share in the triumph or defeat thus connecting the fans more intimately.

Secondly, the aggregate goal format encourages teams to score as many times as possible instead of bunkering as they do when they get a goal ahead.

Thirdly, until soccer becomes more popular; I fear that playing a straight final on neutral turf would’nt draw many fans which would let the air out of what should be an event. Lets wait until the Game has grown before visiting this scenario.

we need a keeper. Lets sign Ray Burse Jr from Dallas if the Rowdies don’t go for Louis Crayton.

Love the schedule, love the formatting. But there is still more info that the fans would like.

Who will we play in the US Open Cup and where? Will all games be televised by a local channel? When will the kit and other accessories be released?

Hopefully, we won’t have too long for them to announce more info.

RowdieRalphie, Burse sounds like a decent player, and he’s only 25. I hope the team signs a keeper soon (you’d figure they’d need one by the time friendlies start on May 1!)
