ST. PETERSBURG Former Ray Edwin Jackson said hello to his old teammates Friday night by throwing a no-hitter against the Rays at Tropicana Field in the Diamondbacks 1-0 victory.
Jackson walked seven of the first 13 batters he faced but settled down to throw the first no-hitter of his career, though he needed 148 pitches pull off the trick.
It was the fourth no-hitter or perfect game in the major leagues this year and the second time the Rays were held hitless.
The Rays fell victim to Oakland’s Dallas Braden, who pitched the 19th perfect game in baseball history. Last July, the Rays were the 18th team to be on the wrong side of a perfect game when Chicago’s Mark Buehrle did at U.S. Cellular Field.
The Rays managed to put 10 runners on base – B.J. Upton was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning, Carlos Peña reached on an error in the eighth and pinch-hitter Willy Aybar walked with two-out in the ninth – but they didn’t come close to getting a hit.
Jason Bartlett bounced out to shortstop to end the game.
