Former prize RB recruit Scott says he is headed to USF

Former Colorado running back Darrell Scott, ranked the nation’s top RB recruit coming out of St. Bonaventure (Calif.) High in 2008, posted on Facebook Monday that he plans to transfer to USF.

“Just got a scholly peeps!!!! You’re looking at a Bull now,’’ Scott wrote. “USF, here I come baby.”

If Scott stands by his public commitment, he would be the most decorated player added to the program since first-year coach Skip Holtz arrived in January.

Scott would have to sit out the 2010 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Scott’s former high school coach, Todd Therrien, had not heard the news directly from Scott as of Monday night. However, he wasn’t surprised.

“It makes sense,’’ Therrien said. “Darrell loved Florida. He grew up some in Tallahassee and was always talking about getting back there. He is more of a Florida guy than a California guy.’’

Scott informed Colorado that he was transferring in November for personal reasons. Many expected Scott to land closer to home at UCLA, but it appears USF may have landed a large piece to fill out its depleted backfield in 2011.

In two seasons at Colorado, Scott failed to meet the lofty expectations of him coming out of high school. He rushed for 459 yards and one touchdown, often criticized by fans for being out of shape.

However, Therrien said not to count Scott out quite yet.

“He is an unbelievable talent,’’ Therrien said. “If he could figure out life and a way to be happy, he would be a tremendous benefit to USF or any program.

“The last time I talked to him [a couple of months ago] he sounded really humble and wanted a chance to start over. If he gets that at USF and stays focused, he’ll be in the NFL in two years.’’

Wow!  I just watched a youtube clip.  The kid looks like Bo Jackson.

I hope the coaching staff is able to help him with his personal problems and leverage his natural talent.

Hey Brian, no doubt Scott looks great on film. There is real mutual interest between Scott and USF, but still some hurdles to work out. We’ll see how it plays out over the summer. If he is focused and in shape, Scott has the talent to make an immediate impact.
