J.J. Turner is returning to Brandon.
Brandon athletic director Tibor Kovacs announced Turner, who played at Brandon from 2000 to 2003, will be the new head boys basketball coach, replacing Allie Turley who stepped down from the position after two seasons as coach to become the new head girls basketball coach at Lennard.
Turner scored 1,164 career points at Brandon and went on to play at Saint Leo University. Kovacs said Turner, who will teach match at Brandon, has coached at Wiregrass Ranch as an assistant coach the last few years.
Turley, who took over at Brandon after longtime coach Mark Hermann resigned in 2008, guided the Eagles to a 11-16 record and to the Class 6A region quarterfinals this past season. Brandon lost to eventual 6A regional runner-up St. Petersburg, 58-43, in the quarterfinals.
The Eagles graduated four players off this year’s team, including its leading scorer and star forward, Travis Green.
