Stanley Suber, a former standout track athlete for East Bay High and Florida A&M University, has been named boys track coach at Wharton High.
Suber, 24, joins forces with veteran coach Wes Newton, who heads the girls track program for the Wildcats, and assistant Anthony Triana. Suber replaces Erika Landers, who has taken a job in the private sector but will still help coach the athletes when possible.
“I can’t wait for the season to start,” Suber said. “I didn’t know I would begin coaching this young but this was a great opportunity to start.”
Suber, a 2005 graduate of East Bay, is one of the fastest quarter milers Hillsborough County has ever produced. At the 2005 Class 3A state track and field championships, Suber earned second place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.89 seconds, which at that time was the nation’s sixth fastest time of the season. Later in that meet, Suber anchored the Indians’ 4x400 relay team to fifth place in 3:22.91.
At FAMU, Suber qualified for the MEAC championships in the 400 and improved his time in the 200 to 21.68. He is currently a substitute teacher in the county.
