University of Kentucky offensive lineman Jorge Gonzalez, a former Tampa Catholic standout, was named the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Lineman of the Week following his performance during the Wildcats’ victory Saturday over Louisiana-Monroe.
Gonzalez, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound senior center, helped pave the way for a Kentucky offense that racked up 330 yards (185 yards rushing) and averaged 6.3 yards per play in the team’s 36-13 win. Among his personal highlights was providing a key block during an 11-yard touchdown run by Randall Cobb in the second quarter.
According to team officials, Gonzalez graded out to 86 percent for the game and did not allow a sack.
Gonzalez is in his second year as a starter for the Wildcats. As a junior he was named Kentucky’s Most Improved Offensive Player. This year he was named to the preseason watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which is given annually to the nation’s best center.
