MINNEAPOLIS - Third-year kick returner Clifton Smith was surprised when the Bucs released him Sept. 5 after two successful seasons, highlighted by a Pro Bowl appearance as a rookie.
Smith, 25, signed three days later with the Dolphins and was all smiles Sunday after Miami notched its second consecutive road victory with a 14-10 win at Minnesota.
The Fresno State product suffered two concussions last year en route to a league-best average of 29.1 yards per kickoff return.
This season also has been bittersweet.
“A lot of ups and downs,” he said. “A real emotional roller coaster, but all that’s behind me. I’m 2-0, so that’s really all that matters.”
Smith remains in constant touch with his former teammates on the Tampa Bay offensive unit.
“Those are still my brothers on that side of the ball,” he said. “I love them to death, and I’ll always wish them well.”
