Former Blake football coach Sean Washington said he received an early Christmas present this week with the news that one of his former Yellow Jackets standouts, defensive end Jeremy Green, had landed a scholarship offer from Division II school Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Green was a senior on the 2008 Blake squad and had led the Yellow Jackets in sacks that season with 11. Green had received interest from several schools last fall and although he had met the grade requirements, Washington said Green needed to improve his test scores. As a result. Green stayed home in Tampa and attended Hillsborough Community College.

Green has since met all the academic requirements and learned this week that JCSU, a historically black college and a liberal arts institution, had made him a scholarship offer.

“This is a great thing because now, both of my defensive ends from that team are going to be playing in college,” said Washington, referring to former Blake star Montrey Pride, now playing for South Carolina State. “I got an early Christmas present with Jeremy latching on with a good school.”
