Former Alonso pitcher Fernandez throws shutout inning in MLB Futures Game

Former Alonso pitcher Jose Fernandez, the Tampa Tribune’s 2011 player of the year, Saladino Award winner and 2011 state champion threw a shutout inning in the Major League Baseball Future’s Game for the World team Sunday in Kansas City, Miss. The game was televised on ESPN2 and is part of the MLB All-Star action.

Fernandez, drafted 14th overall in 2011 by the Miami Marlins, threw the second inning for the World team, which fell to the United States team 17-5.

Fernandez, 19, allowed one hit striking out two in his inning of work and had pitches in the inning clocked at 99 and 98 mph.
As a senior at Alonso, Fernandez was 13-1 with a 1.35 ERA and 134 strikeouts.

After going 7-0 in low Class A Greensboro, Fernandez was promoted to the Florida State League’s Class A Jupiter Hammerheads where he’s 1-0 in two starts.
