Forbes Magazine released its annual valuations of NHL teams today, and the Lightning are ranked 18th. That’s one spot lower than last year.
The franchise was valued at $191 million, down $9 million from last year and $13 million from what OK Hockey paid for the team in July 2008.
Here’s what Forbes said about the Lightning:
“These are tough times in Tampa. The Lighting slashed ticket prices by an average of 10% for the 2009-10 season and team owner Len Barrie said the revenue sharing check the team received from the league last season did not put it into the black. The Lighting missed the playoffs last season as the team was hit hard by the injury bug and goaltender Olie Kolzig and defenseman Jamie Howard were shipped to Toronto at the trade deadline in an attempt to cut payroll. Fans understood the message: Lighting management had given up and attendance dwindled.”
The full NHL package can be read online at Forbes.com.

The Forbes valuation methods are being ridiculed and debated from both teams and fans. It’s the fact that Forbes said team financial data was part of the process in assessing team valuation and at least two teams (The Nashville Predators and Atlanta Thrashers) say they were never contacted by Forbes for access to that data, let alone did they give access.
Debt was also a consideration in the value assessment and Forbes said that 48% of the Atlanta Thrashers value is debt… While the team has no outstanding debt?
Of course, none of this says anything about the Lightning valuation and what not, but it does suggest that Forbes should not be the barometer that team value is estimated by.
