As Florida-Miami games go, Saturday night’s meeting already has been a disappointment.
I’m talking about talking.
Where is it?
For the most part, outside a little self-promotion, the build up to the two schools first regular-season meeting since 2003 has been darn-near polite.
UF senior wide receiver Louis Murphy did a pretty good job of trying to get the smack going early when, immediately after the Gators win last week over Hawaii, he announced he would not refer to Miami by its pet nickname, The U, because Florida is the state’s real university.
Nobel effort. The press corps appreciated it greatly. But what did Murphy get out of it?
A scolding from Gators coach Urban Meyer.
And a gag order.
“He won’t be doing any more interviews this week,’’ Meyer announced on Monday.
By the sound of things, a similar attitude was taken in Miami by Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon.
About the closest thing to inflammatory that came out of South Florida was Xavier Shannon, the coach’s son, telling the Miami Herald that he welcomed the national stage that will be the 8 p.m. ESPN kickoff.
“We wanted the game at 8 o’clock,’’ he said. “Let all the other games get out of the way and everybody else can see us play. I believe it is zero and six lately for Florida. We want to keep it that way. We plan on winning this game.’’
Of course they do. That’s not talking trash.
I’ll tell you what it is. For both teams.
It’s disappointing.
Respectful, sportsmanlike, focused and classy, too.
But disappointing,
