Five Games, Five Questions for 4-1 Bulls

At 4-1, the USF men’s basketball team is off to the best start since Stan Heath took over the program. The Bulls defeated UNC-Wilmington, 74-66, on Sunday in the consolation game of the Charleston (S.C.) Classic.

Junior G Dominique Jones was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 20.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in three games, including a season-high 28 in Sunday’s victory.

Five games into the season, here are five questions whose answers will determine how improved the Bulls are from Heath’s first two seasons:

* Can Jones continue to play at the level he has so far once the Big East schedule starts?

* With four players averaging more than 30 minutes per game—Jones, F Gus Gilchrist, C Jarrid Famous and G Chris Howard—can the Bulls develop enough depth to keep their top players fresh later in the season?

* Will Gilchrist keep playing at such a high level against the big men in the rough and tumble Big East? He is averaging 19.6 points and 7.6 rebounds, showing why he was such a highly touted recruit.

* How good is Famous? In his first five games, the junior-college transfer from New York is averaging 10.8 points and 6.8 rebounds.

* Can the freshmen contribute more than they have already? For the most part, Heath has used a seven-man rotation with Jones, Gilchrist and Famous racking up most of the points.

OK, a sixth question: What’s the most important question you have after the first five games?

1)  Actually, he hasn’t played that great the for 4 of the first 5 games… so yes… he can play at this level… i hope he plays better than he did in the first 4… something between those 4 and the last game would be great!

2)  Crater in Dec. and then Rivas coming back can make that a 9 man rotation… much better.  But right now… 7 man rotation is going to leave us gassed at the end of games.  We need

Will Famous and Gilchrist be able to stay out of foul trouble?

3)  yes… gilchrist is a solid player with a new found energy level.  He will continue to be a great player, stretching defenses… getting offensive boards… his game is really coming along and he’s only a sophomore.

4)  Famous is a high energy player and is getting his points with effort and by running the floor well.  He doesn’t seem very polished, but he makes up for it with endless energy.  We need guys like this on the court. I think he’ll get better as he gets used to the high level of competition.  His best game was SCarolina, the best competition we’ve faced… that is a good sign.

5)  I think they can… but they aren’t getting a chance.  A 7 man rotation isn’t going to cut it.  Our guys will get too tired during the conference season.  Make that an 8 man rotation with Crater, and possibly 9 with Rivas… and now we have guys less tired at the end of games.  We need the freshmen to come in, if only for a breather for our guys… but it hasn’t happened, and I have no reason to think it will, unfortunately, or they would have already been in there.

6th question?
We have 3 scorers (jones, gilchrist, and famous)... where is the rest of the offense going to come from…  After those 3, the rest of the players are averaging under around 5 or less points per game.  Howard averaged almost 10 last year… Leemow has been hitting some outside shot… but no one is really stepping up. With 3 guys drawing all the attention… it should be a certainty that a 4th guy could get open shots pretty often… who is going to knock down those shots regularly?

Velcro, thanks for taking the quiz smile ... no doubt USF is going to need some more scoring ... Once Crater is available—Heath calls him by far the team’s best point guard—maybe he’ll be able to open the offense some and give others some scoring opportunities ... ultimately, they are going to need some points from one of those three freshman guards ... if one of those guys can hit shots consistently, it will be a huge boost for this team.
