Find A Fishing Spot: Saltwater | Freshwater
|

By MIKE ANDERSON
The unseasonably warm temperatures seem to have some of our favorite inshore species a little confused about where they should be at this point of the fall. We caught fish this week in late-summer and fall spots. The docks and some residential canals are starting to load up nicely, though there are still good numbers of snook hanging on the flats waiting to make their move.
The redfish were a little scarce Monday and Tuesday, but they seemed to really go well on the higher daytime tides Wednesday and Thursday. Pretty good schools are starting to roam around Fort DeSoto, Weedon Island and into the north end of the bay. Greenbacks floated under corks have been hot, and they also are having a hard time turning down Gulp shrimp worked just above the grass on an eighth-ounce jig head.
The trout bite is improving as well, with some bigger fish already starting to show on the Bay area flats. But remember, the season closes in the South Region on Sunday and won’t reopen until Jan. 1, so be sure to use your dehooking device. We have good trout fishing, but we must practice catch and release for now.
Keep your eyes open for cobia. My good friend, captain George Joana managed to catch nice keepers Thursday while fishing the inaugural BBI fishing tournament to benefit kids. Cobia usually start to show themselves around this time each year, so keep your eyes open and have a pinfish handy.
