NEW YORK—The USF men’s basketball team played like a team with something left to play for in Tuesday’s victory over DePaul.
The Bulls jumped on DePaul early for a 58-49 win over the Blue Demons in the first round of the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden.
Dominique Jones scored a team-high 20 points as USF built a 19-point lead, 30-11, late in the first half. Jones scored 14 in the first 20 minutes.
The victory was the Bulls’ 20th of the season, the first time they have won 20 games since 1990.
It was also the Bulls’ first win in the Big East Conference Tournament.
USF will face Georgetown in the second round on Wednesday at noon.
Considered one of the Big East teams on the bubble, most pundits predict USF needs to win at least three games here to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 18 years.

Wow, what an ugly win (the best type). It was just like when a #1 seed looks rough getting past by a #16 seed in the NCAA Tourny. Just win and move on. I strogly believe that win or lose tomorrow, usf will look much better. I am sure, based on the f.t. shooting for example, usf was looking past this game.
usf did play some really tough defense. The hustle was there but the play was definitely not crisp. usf will not sneak up on Georgetown this time. A team can always bring hustle to a game. Congrats on 20 wins! It will take 21 wins to get in. I have zero doubt that if usf wins tomorrow, they are in.
