GAINESVILLE—Lost opportunity.
That’s the best way to view the University of South Florida’s 38-14 loss against the Florida Gators on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulls nearly carried a 7-0 lead into halftime, but a crushing interception by Bulls QB B.J. Daniels allowed the Gators to tie it. In the third quarter, USF seemed poised to retake the lead, but Demetris Murray lost a fumble at the UF 12-yard line. That set up a go-ahead 62-yard TD run by UF’s Jeff Demps.
Overall, Daniels rushed for 107 yards, but was just 5-for-20 passing for 84 yards and four interceptions.
“Turnovers,’’ USF coach Skip Holtz said. “That’s the story. Turnovers. You can’t make turnovers and win. That’s No. 1 on our plan, don’t make turnovers and I believe we were a minus-5. You can’t win like that.’‘
USF now has an open week before facing Western Kentucky on Sept. 25 at Raymond James Stadium. To a man, the Bulls say they must respond from this loss and show improved play, particularly during the Big East Conference season.
If that takes place, Holtz said “this game may ultimately be remembered as one of the best things that happened to us.’‘

Whenever a really good team plays an underdog, I know that eventually the depth on the good team prevails. It may look good for a quarter or two, but eventually the lesser team runs out of gas. But today USF was only the lesser team because of 3 dumb mistakes and some poor special teams play. You can’t rewrite what happened, but I saw enough out there today to say that USF can win the Big East and probably would take UF in a rematch. considering that Holtz & the new staff had limited time to evaluate our existing players, recruit, and then implement any changes - I am d@mned impressed. Good things are coming. The final score didn’t reflect what happened on the field. Go Bulls!

I agree with you Dan…....USF will win the BE w/Holtz and BJ. Today we may have witnessed a USF loss but we also saw, based on Holtz’s and other players’ comments, a more focused squad than in years past.
This team has tons of young talent and given time, Holtz will bring a parade of titles to USF. And if anyone is looking for proof, Holtz’s quote at the end of the post says it all.

Unfortunately I disagree with you guys. This offense only has one playmaker, and that’s Daniels. He has to rely too much on his feet and that hurts his passing game. It’s going to be a rough season.
That said, I liked some of the option calls better than in seasons past. They were designed better and should be used more. Also, the team did seem more poised at times than CJL’s teams did. However, they seem to have lacked a bit of that raw emotion that his teams always had. Finally, I was encouraged by the D-line and secondary. I think the secondary will be getting better and better as the season progresses.

Daniels’ days at QB are numbered. Holtz recruited and tried to recruit a LOT of other QB’s, but based on the short time he had, he was always going to go with Daniels at the beginning. Holtz also has stated that Daniels cannot be our #1 rusher. Daniels has not had enough time to learn to read defenses, and, like Blackwell and Groethe, if he doesn’t see something right away, he rarely goes to the checkdown man or the 3 yard run, he tries to make a play. That’s fun to watch and it makes for some occasional great plays, but it costs you big time when you play against discliplined defenses - like Florida - and turns into INT’s or sacks for massive yards lost. Daniels is not the future, but he will do fine for now.

I think we tend to forget that there was potential for a huge dropoff in performance after an unplanned head coach firing and complete coaching staff change. Most schools would take a big step back; we don’t seem to have done that. That’s huge in my book, and I feel that if Holtz were given the time to do things properly, we will see big dividends from bringing him here. I look for that midway through this season or the start of next season. That’s what I was referring to.
