Final NFL statistics not kind to Bucs

The Bucs’ rankings among the final NFL regular-season statistics are, for the most part, befitting of their 3-13 record.

Tampa Bay ranked 28th in the 32-team league in total offense at 287.5 yards per game. That breaks down to 23rd in rushing at 101.6 yards and 24th in passing at 185.9 yards.

The results were rather mixed on defense. Overall, Tampa Bay ranked 27th at 365.6 yards allowed per game, led by the 10th-ranked pass defense at 207.4 yards. But the run defense, the unit’s Achilles’ heel for the majority of the season, was the worst in the NFL at 158.2 yards. The league average for rushing yards allowed was 116.7.

The good news? Well, there’s always special teams.

Coordinator Richard Bisaccia’s units produced three returns for touchdowns - one each on a punt return, kick return and blocked punt - and blocked six kicks.

The Bucs ranked fourth in punt return average (11.6 yards), second in kick return average (26.2 yards), 14th in punt coverage (8.2 yards) and second in kickoff coverage (19.1 yards). Of course, Tampa Bay did rank last in field goal percentage (61.5, 16 of 26), but most of those misses were before Connor Barth’s midseason arrival.

Barth was 14 of 19, including three field goals of 50 or more yards against the Dolphins.
