TAMPA – The University of South Florida won’t be putting up any billboards this time.
In what was billed as the biggest home game in school history – and a chance to knock off another member of the Big 3 – No. 19 Miami made its first visit to Tampa in 25 years a meaningful one, easily knocking off USF 31-10 on Saturday at Raymond James Stadium.
“They are just a better football team,’’ USF coach Jim Leavitt said. “Our day will come. We’ve got to keep recruiting, you all saw that.’‘
The Hurricanes (9-3) closed their regular season with a convincing win against the upstart Bulls, driving 81 yards on their opening drive on the way to a 21-3 halftime lead.
Miami quarterback Jacory Harris threw two touchdown passes and running back Javarris James had two touchdown runs to prevent USF from any chance at a headline-grabbing upset like the one the Bulls pulled off at Florida State two months ago.
After that game, school officials erected a billboard hyping USF turning the Big 3 – Florida, Miami and FSU – into the Big 4 by virtue of the Bulls’ victory over the Seminoles in their first meeting.
On Saturday before an announced crowd of 66,469 – the second-largest home crowd in school history – the Hurricanes came ready to play from the opening kickoff.
Harris hit Leonard Hankerson for a 12-yard touchdown pass on the game’s opening drive, capping a 12-play, 81-yard march down the field. A B.J. Daniels fumble led to Miami’s second score, a 5-yard run by James with 1:50 left in the first quarter.
After Eric Schwartz’s 36-yard field goal trimmed Miami’s lead to 14-3 early in the second quarter, Harris directed an 11-play, 85-yard drive that ended on James’ 2-yard run.
The Bulls threatened to make a game of it in the third quarter after Daniels hit A.J. Love for a 12-yard touchdown pass, but USF’s momentum quickly faded and Miami essentially put the game away on a 33-yard pass from Harris to tight end Dedrick Epps with 1:38 left in the third quarter.
The Bulls close the regular season at Connecticut next week and then must wait to see what bowl bid awaits, most likely the Papajohns.com Bowl.

“They are just a better football team,’’ USF coach Jim Leavitt said. “Our day will come. We’ve got to keep recruiting, you all saw that.”
In a nutshell, that’s the story. UM’s guys were so BIG. and FAST. They blew our guys off the ball on offense and defense. We have to keep recruiting - coach nailed it on the head. No amount of scheming was going to make up that size difference tonight. USF tends to play well against the finesse teams and lose to the bigger more physical teams, and tonight that is what I saw.

5 years ago we weren’t even in the Big east, but our chance came to get into a BCS conference, and we took it. We were doing well in CUSA but had to take the opportunity. 5 years later, here we are, with people screaming that we fire the coach every time we don’t beat more than 4 of our 7 conference opponents. Forget that some of these schools have 100 years of history and recruiting, or 75 years of alumni, or no other National Champs in their state. I love the fact that we were overmatched tonight and still came out and played hard. We have NOT always done that.

I hope our guys remember what this feels like, when nobody gives you a chance to win. We may not beat Miami next year or even the year after that, but it is only a matter of time before we do - they know it and we know it. Only a matter of time. It was a loss and it hurt, but we know where we are, and we know where we want to be, and we know we are going to get there. For those of you who felt the need to jump off the bandwagon, there will still be a little room for you in a few years when you want back on.

The Diva was 8-8 lifetime in C-USA. As long as medicrocity is rewarded (or considered “doing well”), real improvement won’t come.
At very least there should be some pressure put on the head coach to improve on his consistent failures, but no, instead he is going to get an automatic pay increase again at the end of the season, and probably a bonus for making a bowl game. If he really cared about the program, he would put that money back into the coaching pool.

take away the first 3 wins this season against 2 D2 schools and a school that is in its first year of D1 and you have a losing record….and they will lose at uconn too

We should have lost to FSU.
I’m convinced of it now. If we had lost to the Noles, everyone would have said that we have a rookie QB playing against really good teams, and we are all going to have to be patient while the program grows up with him. Anybody going to miss Murphy’s mistakes on defense next year? Or Alvarado’s inconsistency? I love these guys, but they are kids, and kids make mistakes. Know why Collaros was such a big story for Louisville? Because it’s such a rarity when the backup takes over and the program doesn’t miss a step. The fans around here always want our story to be the one in a million story at every aspect of the game, instead of the impressive story we are.

If you were a marketing person, you might say that USF has been brilliant in the way it beats its cupcakes every year and manages to get ranked early in the season. That gets national press and ESPN mentions. It build a story about IS THIS THE YEAR. I guess it helps in recruiting (???) because we had a really good recruiting class this year. We moved from NO conference to CUSA too quickly, but we were middle of the pack when we got there. Not bad. We moved from CUSA to Big East when the opportunity came, and we are middle of the pack or a little worse since getting there. Not bad, really. (more)

(cont.) It helped get us the funds to build an athletic center that helped tremendously in recruiting - we GOT 2 or 3 guys that Miami wanted. Next year, we’ll get a few more because we are playing them. We’ll keep building just like miami did, and one day - relatively soon - we will be a contender. When that day comes, we will all be amazed that it happened as fast as it did. Until that day, we will all be frustrated that it takes as long as it is.

wow, stack contrast to what I have red here before the game. Who you thought we were, FSU? We are the premiere college football team in the state, we’ve had our down years and we are on our way back. We are DA U the program of legends, a little respect would go a long way. I guess I was tired of hearing all the blah blah and the guarantees from BJ on the radio, and my school did too. I do not mean to be negative or belittle your program, but all the talk about being no 2 in the state of Florida does not mean sh*t to us. We are the U no. 2 is not an option. And those clowns in Gainsville enjoy it while you can because there is a storm brewing in the gables, come next year it will be a category 5. USF will be OK we love you

dau (pronounced “Duh”), you is ability to be inane is exceeded only by your illiteracy, and honestly, after deciphering your post, no other comment on Miami is necessary! Thanks for the smiles.

Dan thank you for the insult, it was expected. But let me apologize if I came across as arrogant and ignorant I have been here for a week now and all I have heard was garbage on the radio. I understand that you’ve got pride but you were clearly outclassed yesterday. I like your program and think that you have the ability to be good. Dan if you did not know Miami is one of the best schools in the country when it comes to education. My beef is clearly not with you but with the crocs. I would like to see them play you like we did, but the Urban the Myth won’t because he is a chicken. Again floks I was not trying to disrespect you .. Go Canes

dau: Well then allow me to repay the compiment. I lived in south Florida for 3 years and worked in Coral Gables most of that time, and I had 2 friends who played for the U. So I know how to hot wire a car, take steroids, and get a passing grade for a class I never attended (that’s payback for the “ignorant” comment). But I like the Canes when we don’t play them, not so sure Randy Shannon is the guy to return you to glory, and look forward to next year’s game. It may take us a few years to be able to beat you, but we WILL beat you. Remember, right about the time USF started playing football is when Miami stopped winning championships. Coincidence? I don’t think so!

DA U. You are clearly deficient in simple grammar. At USF, you would have learned that along with subject-verb agreement. Furthermore, I hate to bust your fantasy, but UM is not even listed as a high-tier research university. There are only 2 in the state: UF and USF. The latest accolade? USF is #1 IN THE ENTIRE NATION in new dollars spent on scientific research. We blew our nearest competition out of the water by a whopping 213%. We were told we could never achieve this as a public Florida university. You ain’t seen nothing yet. Baby U is still growing. We have no need to feel beneath UM. Our stellar accomplishments speak for themselves. Now go back to that toilet you call a city.

joecole,
“Our stellar accomplishments speak for themselves.”
Are you really speaking of USF when you say that?
US News & World Report rank the “U” as #50 in their National University Rankings for 2010. Do you know where USF is ranked, with their “stellar accomplishments” and all? .... USF isn’t even ranked in the top 128. They’re in what US News & World Report call “Tier 3” in their ranking system, which basically means that you’re below the Florida Institute of Technology, UCF and barely above Barry University - who is a “Tier 4”
You’re on Page 8 of 11 pages. Wow. That surely is “stellar”

As for the NCAA Academic Progress Report, USF is basically dead last (or next to last) between the following schools: The “U”, UF, FSU & UCF for the major men’s sports
The APR is based on the eligibility, retention and graduation of each scholarship student-athlete
The “U” is ranked 7th IN THE NATION for APR, behind only Stanford, Air Force, Duke, Rutgers, Rice & Navy. UF is ranked 20th in the nation .. FSU is tied for 80th .. where did USF end up? Good luck finding them above 115th in the nation
APR scores for The “U”: baseball 970, basketball 964, football 977, outdoor track 991

Want to know where USF is? TBO did an article on how horrible USF is. USF football has the WORST APR among all BCS Conference schools, while USF basketball has the 3rd WORST APR in the nation
BCS Bottom 10 WORST FOOTBALL APR SCORES:
1. USF 909
2. Ole Miss 910
3. Minnesota 915
BCS Bottom 10 WORST MEN’S BASKETBALL APR SCORES:
1. Indiana 866
2. Iowa State 877
3. USF 878
BIG EAST FOOTBALL APR RANKINGS:

8. USF 909
BIG EAST BASKETBALL APR RANKINGS:

USF had to apply for an NCAA waiver so they wouldn’t lose scholarships. That’s just how “stellar” they are

I could list endless accomplishments The “U” has in academics, research, fund raising, athletics - but then you’d probably just counter with how the city of Miami is a .. toilet? Really?
It’s ok to admit USF has an inferiority complex, always trying to puff their chest out and then try to sit at the big boy table with the Big 3 in the state ... but sometimes you just have to remember who you are and know your role.
How about having a winning record in your own conference first. How about beating Rutgers more than once every 4 years. How about beating Cincinnati more than once every 4 years.

How about acknowledging how stupid it is to say USF has “stolen” recruits away from The “U” - clearly, it didn’t seem to hurt the Canes or help USF either. Kayvon Webster decided to sign with USF instead of The “U” - oh no! How will the Canes survive? Just forget the whole year and call their recruiting class a bust, b/c a kid decided to go somewhere other than Miami. *tear*. Who cares if a kid decides to go elsewhere - the fact any USF fan tries to bring that up is proof that their inferiority complex is kicking into high gear, thinking that is some kind of accomplishment. Please.
I expected more out of USF against Miami. I gave them way too much credit. They were nothing but ants in a pile that got stomped

Tenacity. You CLEARLY missed the point, but then again, that’s what I would expect from your so-called high-level education, if you even went to UM. Most of your info is wrong, and some of it you embellished. Hey, did Crist rip anyone else off the city commission this week? Que? Glad you’re back in the Detroit of the South. Please don’t come back and pollute our city. Trash should be kept in a landfill. Miami.
