Bucs Report
Favre On Verge Of Joining Bucs

The Brett Favre saga could end with the NFL icon in pewter.

The Tribune has learned Favre will not stand in the way of a trade from Green Bay to Tampa Bay and the deal is likely to be finalized within 24 hours.

The chances of the trade unraveling are remote and Favre has indicated to the Bucs directly that he is willing to change teams after 16 years of growing his legend in Green Bay.

The Packers, unwilling to deal the 3-time league MVP to an NFC North rival, view the Bucs as a compromise in this ugly impasse. The Bucs view Favre as an upgrade on QB Jeff Garcia, who made the Pro Bowl in 2007 while leading Tampa Bay to an NFC South title.

Once it became clear to Favre that he wasn’t welcome back in Green Bay, he became more flexible in terms of accepting a trade to clubs outside the division. The Bucs have been interested in Favre since last month, when he announced he wanted to play again.

The Bucs could make the trade announcement official by Wednesday, but Favre will have little time to learn Coach Jon Gruden’s complex system because the Bucs open the regular season Sept. 7 at division rival New Orleans.

You get paid to do what now?

Do your bosses (the subscribers) get a refund when you screw up?

Just wondering if there is such a thing as accountability in journalism....

Hey nice job Tribune. “The chances of the trade unraveling are remote...”
Good sources Ira. I guess the guy at the end of the bar that you talked to was wrong.

Thank God this news is OVER! Now Ira has to write about REAL news not this crap.

From a business perspective Favre makes money for the Glazers

From a football perspective Favre brings a greater win probability… plus who would you rather have mentoring your QB underlings??

From a fan perspective --- Are you guys really already attached to Garcia?? I mean… great guy… don’t get me wrong.

Favre is a legend and I look forward to seeing him in Tampa… my only concern is what everybody is going to do with those Greenbay Sucks… Brett Favre Swa.... T-shirts???

Still waiting for this Tampa Tribune “prediction” to come true.

Posted by  Mark Rodriguez, Tampa on 08/06  at  06:55 PM

The interceptions come because he’s a gambler. If you don’t put your chips on the table, you’ll never win a hand. Sure he will turn the ball over more than Garcia, but he will throw for far more yards and TD’s as well. Our offense is immediately improved on the mere threat he will air it out..and he will.

Check the career stats and get back to me...and not just the INT’s. Safe QBs who manage games don’t win championships unless you have the Ravens defense of 2000 or the Buc’s in 2002. Garcia is a game manager.  I like the guy, but the next time he takes a game over and wins it for us will be the first time.

Favre is in the discussion when debating the best QB’s of all time.  His record, stats, and durability, speak for themselves.

Knights: You are exactly the type of Homer I’m talking about. Strip away the jerseys, the team names, and the cities.  Remove away all of your biased fan-based opinions. Read 10 national articles by professional sports jounalists regarding the Garcia vs. Favre debate and you will see that THERE IS NO DEBATE.

Garcia is adequate for the type of offense we run, but adequate got us beat in the first round of the playoffs and left us with the 16th ranked passing offense in the NFL. Good but not good enough. Guess where Green Bay ranked...2nd in passing offense and a few plays away from the Superbowl.

Certainly Garcia is an upgrade from Gradkowski and anyone else that is presently on our roster, but don’t kid yourself, he isn’t Brett Favre.

Love those Bucs.  Straight up I’d take Garcia today over Favre to win a Bucs game.  Straight up I’d take Favre over Garcia to sell tickets and ads. If Garcia ends up in Chicago or Minn the Pack is going to be SORRY.

All you Farve monkeys seem to forget that during the Packers’ Super Bowl runs they had a defense led by the legendary Minister of Defense, the Man who REALLY put Green Bay back on the football map, Reggie White.

Tampa does still have a formidable defense, but it it no where near the defense OR the late season home field advantage Favre had to cover his foolishness in Green Bay.

Brett Farve will be as big a disaster in another uniform as Joe Namath, LA Ram, Ken Stabler, Saint, or Tim Rice, Buc.

Posted by  Knights86, Tampa, FL on 08/06  at  06:02 PM

Why are people “homers” for not wanting a guy who never saw a pass he didn’t like, no matter how ill-advised, running an offense that’s all about not turning it over and control.  Is a QB who knows the system and who threw the second fewest INTs in the NFL last season a better option than a guy who lacks discipline and tied for the 4th most INTs and who has thrown the most in NFL history, including the one that sent his team home for good last season a better option at the starting position.

Take the names away and look at the stats, Garcia is a better fit for what Tampa asks of its QB.  But you’d have to not be high from sniffing Favre’s jock to realize that.

I am a Wisconsin native and am feeling a great sense of loss with every news report we get on Brett Favre and the Packers.  I feel a very emotional bond to the Packers and of corse to Brett Favre who has had such a wonderful history with the Pack. It has always been a love, love relationship between Brett and Green Bay fans.  I just wish I was having a bad nightmare and wake up tomorrow with Brett Favre still retired. This is not the way his career should end.  We still love you Brett and wish you the best, but please reconsider and come back, I can’t fathom you in a Tampa Bay uniform.

Posted by  Gerry Schnider, Seattle on 08/06  at  04:21 PM

Brett may be Football Hall of Fame material but he could also make the Emotional Goofball Hall of Fame.  Chucky is enough, we don’t need Bretty to go with him.  Go to the Jets, please..........

Posted by  BigBucFan, Sarasota on 08/06  at  02:59 PM

Every sports news TV & Radio Show should be paying Brett royalties right now. Their ratings are through the roof. Favre is bringing so much publicity to these cities, ESPN & NFL Channel. At least we aren’t talking about gas prices. Could be worse.

Posted by  Mark Rodriguez, Tampa on 08/06  at  02:57 PM

In addition, with Favre, we not only have the buzz that comes along with him (love it or hate it) but we improve our offense immediately.  Favre gives us a legitimate deep threat, not because he has a strong arm, but because he isn’t afraid to use it.  Our receivers will get a little more space and our running game will open up as a result of this added threat (more nickel and fewer 8 man fronts).  Sure, Garcia is mobile, but we aren’t asking Favre to beat him in a 40 yard dash. Again, Advantage: Favre.

As for locker room impact: even with Derrick, Rhonde, and other vets on this team, everyone will be running a little faster, hitting a little harder, and, most of all, blocking a little better, with Favre around.  That can not be denied.

Posted by  Mark Rodriguez, Tampa on 08/06  at  02:51 PM

I know it’s tough to take your “Homer” hat off and be objective, but let’s all try that for a moment:
Favre or Garcia?
Both are 38. One has won MVP’s, a Superbowl, more games than any other QB in NFL history, and hasn’t missed a game in 16 years. The other has not.  Advantage: Favre.

Garcia is a nice, mid-level NFL QB, and if we went into the season with him, I would expect to make the playoffs, but that’s where my expectation ends.  Favre led his team to the NFC Championship game after starting the season with ZERO running game.  Advantage: Favre.

I didn’t hear anyone say we were Superbowl, or even Playoff bound, when we signed Garcia.  Now all of a sudden he’s a better option than Favre.  C’mon people.

So ohnyohny do you think we have a future with garcia next year.  No we are screwed either way.  we might as well get a better qb this year.

Posted by  ohnyohny, long island on 08/06  at  02:35 PM

please go away bret. how any of u think he can help this team AFTER this season is a joke. One year deal, who comes in as jonnies qb? we’ll be stuck with crap, not simms, not the greeseball nor luke. we have no future and the only future is for gurden and now. its a win now or ur gone. say goodbye

The news coming out of GB is that he’s on his way back to Hattiesburg. His agent told the press gathered there and I quote: “You don’t go where they don’t want you”. It’s anybodys guess what that means but since the Pack were in talks with two teams, I’m taking it as nobody really wants him. What a sad shame to end your career like this but if that don’t deflate his ego nothing will.

Posted by  JPacker, Gainesville on 08/06  at  01:57 PM

Favre has been, and is, a great quarterback. But how can you say goodbye to your team and force them to take a new tack and then six months later try and say that you take it all back? I love the Packers and I love Brett, but he made a stupid mistake. Who really knows if he’d be the best QB for Green Bay this year - it’s possible. But how much craziness should a football organization go through?

Posted by  Knights86, Tampa, FL on 08/06  at  01:52 PM

I applaud the Packers’ front office for looking out for the best interests of the organization.  They did not let Favre create a nightmare like the one that Miami faced with the Marino/Jimmy Johnson war.

THe Packers have moved on.  For better or worse, the team that has worked in mini-camps and all through the off-season is the team they are going with, not a self serving waffler who did nothing to help the team prepare for life after him, and is doing everything possible to sabotage the team’s chances for success RIGHT NOW.  If you are a Green Bay Packer fan, you have to hate what Favre is doing to your team.  If you are a Bret Favre fan claiming to be a Packer fan, you are as selfish as he is.
