Favre On Verge Of Joining Bucs

Posted Aug 6, 2008 by Ira Kaufman

Updated Aug 6, 2008 at 07:44 AM

The Brett Favre saga could end with the NFL icon in pewter.

The Tribune has learned Favre will not stand in the way of a trade from Green Bay to Tampa Bay and the deal is likely to be finalized within 24 hours.

The chances of the trade unraveling are remote and Favre has indicated to the Bucs directly that he is willing to change teams after 16 years of growing his legend in Green Bay.

The Packers, unwilling to deal the 3-time league MVP to an NFC North rival, view the Bucs as a compromise in this ugly impasse. The Bucs view Favre as an upgrade on QB Jeff Garcia, who made the Pro Bowl in 2007 while leading Tampa Bay to an NFC South title.

Once it became clear to Favre that he wasn’t welcome back in Green Bay, he became more flexible in terms of accepting a trade to clubs outside the division. The Bucs have been interested in Favre since last month, when he announced he wanted to play again.

The Bucs could make the trade announcement official by Wednesday, but Favre will have little time to learn Coach Jon Gruden’s complex system because the Bucs open the regular season Sept. 7 at division rival New Orleans.

to John Geiger, you are an idiot.  You’ll never forgive Brett!!  Do you remember the 70’s to the mid 80’s when the Packers were the laughing stock of the division.  Favre gave fans hope everytime he stepped on the field.  If Thompson wasn’t a chicken, he’d let Brett go where he wants.  Why doesn’t Thompson left him go to Minn…cause he know Brett has still the passion to play at 100% and that Favre would beat the Pack twice this year.  If Brett goes to TB, I’ll be looking forward to Sept 28th game and I’ll proudly be wearing my new #4 jersey.

All of you Coach, Front office, and now Brett Favre haters, are the same people who probably frequent the same restaurant, and always complain about the service and the food yet STILL go back everyday..It’s getting a little old..15 years ago we’d kill for this regime.. How about supporting our team!!

I slowly loosing my loyalty to the Packers.  I hope he does well in TB.  I will enjoy watching Favre play again, unfortunately for a different team.  I hope he wins another SB ring just to show Ted that he still can play better than Aaron Rodgers.  AR will not be starting for the Packers by years end.

Favre was a pleasure to watch for 16 yrs in Green Bay.  He brought a refreshing and genuine love for the game.  But he was the one who retired. no one had a gun to his head. the team, headed by Ted Thompson, has to look out for the team, not one player.  K eep in mind, Tampa Fans..the Giants lost a prima dona running back last y ear..and also didnt have shockey…good individual players.  but who won the super bowl?  the team…not a couple selfish players.  Favre has become that player…all about Brett.  Not wishing him any ill will…he is a good guy in many respects. but he has surrounded himself with some selfish people and it has affected his image in Wisconsin.  I’ll take my chances with the team Thompson has assembled.  Go Rodgers!

I am certainly happy to see Brett become a Buc; but at the same time I am very unhappy to see Jeff be treated this way because he has done a wonderful job leading the Buc!  I am a former Minnesotan so I know what the vikings must have felt knowing that Brett won’t be in their division any longer; he’s dangerous in the two minute drill.

I hope there will be someway to keep BOTH BRETT AND JEFF!!!!!

Hi y’all,

A packer fan for 50yrs, shareholder etc.
Thomson did everything possible to get
Favre to retire and finally he is getting what he deserves a Team without a quarterback, with midiocre talent and another loosing season. Thomson is bad for the packers and Pres. Murphy should step up and replace him with a GM with Talent and an inovative Coach. Good luck Grooden, you deserve Favre.

To all of you clowns that keep saying that the bucs should trade for him and then turn around and trade him to minnesota: IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!

Whoever he gets traded too first, the packers will make sure that they will have a clause in the trade that prohibits the other team from trading him to a NFC north team.

Do you all really think the packeres are so stupid that they have not thought about it?

I’m really hoping that Favre comes to Tampa Bay.  The move will FINALLY drive Gruden out of town. That’s something I’ve been wishing for 5 years.  Two huge egos trying to run the quarterback position? Disaster.  Gruden is .500 in 6 years in T.B. Throw out the first year (using Dungy’s players) and he is 36-44. His best years were in Oakland, where Al Davis made all the personnel decisions.

Ben in Whitewater:  You are what we call a “Fair Weather Fan”.  Have fun cheering for the Bucs…until Favre gets traded or retires again and you find a new winner to chase.  We won’t miss you.

Yes Daniel Smith of Toronto, I believe the Packers management is stupid.  UNBELIEVEABLY STUPID!

With Favre, the Bucs will go 13 - 3.  The Packers are headed for 6 -10.  Look at their schedule.  Look at their newly created void at QB.

What a sad day in Packerland.  I wish Brett continued success as he heads to Tampa.  He will be greatly missed in GB.  Simply the Best!

I wish we could trade Thompson, McCarthy, and Murphy instead!  They are as good as gone after this season.  They’ve turned over half the fanbase away.  So sad to see with the oranization that we have all treasured for decades.

No!

If he comes here and does horrible, which is more likley to happen then I say fire Bruce Allen. If he does good then I will apologize, but he probably wont do that good. Also im going to lmao if he throws more INTs than TDs and we got rid of Garcia.

It will be great having a heterosexual quarterback running the offense again.

on one side i feel like we do get an upgrade if favre comes down to ray-jay. but what does that say to Gracia? what does that say to other possible free agents if we get rid of gracia, come play for us and have a pretty good year, but if theres someone better then sorry, everything you did was in vein??? i really dont know how i feel about this. 50-50 at best. GO BUCS!

Look…Favre is an upgrade - period.  Even better, I think this offense is well-suited to bringing him in.  For one, it’s a west coast variant, meaning the Favre understands the system and how to excel within it.  Second, we’ve got the personell to make it work.  The o-line is strong, the running game is solid, and the WR corps is good enough.  Besides, Favre didn’t ahve great WRs in Green Bay, he merely made the okay ones he had look even better.  Plus, no team would dare put 8 in the box with Favre under center - which will only make the running game that much more productive.

This is a good move…if it eventually gets done.

To joe berard, I never said starr won five super bowls, I said he won five championships.  Read better, you are the one who is stupid.  Also, dumb comments about Farve “could have”  and “if”.  He didn’t, he won one championship.  Big deal.  And we “could” have won a couple more but he threw bad passes and intercepcions.

To joe berard, just because you know you are wrong you resort to name calling and insults.  You don’t know nothing.  I always thought he was over rated and he now has gone crazy too, maybe he’s back on the booze and drugs.  You can have him.  Go Pack go!
