Favre On Verge Of Joining Bucs

Posted Aug 6, 2008 by Ira Kaufman

Updated Aug 6, 2008 at 07:44 AM

The Brett Favre saga could end with the NFL icon in pewter.

The Tribune has learned Favre will not stand in the way of a trade from Green Bay to Tampa Bay and the deal is likely to be finalized within 24 hours.

The chances of the trade unraveling are remote and Favre has indicated to the Bucs directly that he is willing to change teams after 16 years of growing his legend in Green Bay.

The Packers, unwilling to deal the 3-time league MVP to an NFC North rival, view the Bucs as a compromise in this ugly impasse. The Bucs view Favre as an upgrade on QB Jeff Garcia, who made the Pro Bowl in 2007 while leading Tampa Bay to an NFC South title.

Once it became clear to Favre that he wasn’t welcome back in Green Bay, he became more flexible in terms of accepting a trade to clubs outside the division. The Bucs have been interested in Favre since last month, when he announced he wanted to play again.

The Bucs could make the trade announcement official by Wednesday, but Favre will have little time to learn Coach Jon Gruden’s complex system because the Bucs open the regular season Sept. 7 at division rival New Orleans.

As a former resident of Wisconsin and as a lifelong Packer fan who now resides in Tallahassee, Brett Favre has done much for the Packers and Wisconsin. A change of scenery may do Brett well, his own ego got the best of him in GB. Brett will go down as one of the top ten QB’s of all time, but to be frank his best years are behind him. Brett Favre’s mobility is not what it was, and the ego this man possesses causes him to make stupid decisions, attempting to force the ball into situations he shouldn’t. Brett doesn’t know when to quit, and its a shame because Brett Favre is only tainting his legacy by continuing on when he should of quit two years ago. TB will have a HOF QB by name only.

Wait are you serious Brett favre to the bucs??  Bad move idiots this guy will come and give us 4-12!  We dont have the recievers Green Bay has.  I like Garcia’s fit for the team a lot better than Favre.  We are talking about a guy who is focused on one thing himself!  Tiger Woods of Football? LMAO more like Phil Mickelson of football!  Brett Favre should just retire!

Favre will make a good backup to Brian Griese.

For those bringing up Montana - Brett Favre is no Joe Montana. Brett Favre is a gunslinger. TB is getting a strong armed QB who plays with wreckless abandon. Just remember he is one of the top ten of all time, but no he is not Joe Montana. Joe was a smart, precision high accuracy QB. Brett Favre thinks with his arm strength and his ego.

Well, you have to all agree: if the Bucs have started this interest in a trade for Favre it would be devastating to the team if it fell through.  To me it is easy: an injury-prone Garcia versus the most durable quarterback in NFL history.  See ya, Garcia!

JAY GLAZER OF FOX SPORTS IS SAYING THIS STORY IS COMPLETELY FALSE.  The deal is far from done, seeing as the jets have the best offer on the table.  I knew something was wrong when the tribune was breaking this story.  Standup reporting as usual guys.  Saying Brett Favre is on the verge of joining the bucs and chances of it unraveling are remote when a deal isn’t close to done is responsible journalism.

I dont know how Buc fans can’t be excited about this! Farve is only the best QB of our era! Why wouldn’t you want him in Red n pewter…heck, id rather go 8-8 with Favre than 9-7 with Garcia.
The fact is, Garcia dug his own grave with that little rant of his a few months ago. He should’ve just shut up in front of the media. And now, the calf thing, he’s just shutting it down - a la Brian Kelly and his “Turf Toe”.
Good bye & good riddance Garcia! Go be a malcontent somewhere else. I am ecstatic about Favre coming to tampa..HOPEFULLY!

LeighAnn, you do realize that trading in your Bucs tag for a Lightning tag due to a teams restructuring is well…hypocritical I guess? Do you realize that we have a completely different line up in the Lightning than there was last season, fan favorites were traded and players and staff were fired or brought in to much dismay of many a fan? As a Lightning fan, please don’t jump on our bandwagon, get a Rays tag instead.

Favre will help, the team will get better once he is on the roster.

Also Garcia only made the pro bowl because Brett opted out of it

Hey Scott Drexel, who do you root for in week 4? Bucs or Pack? Thompson is an idiot & McCarthy is a close 2’nd. Those guys will both be toast by January. I always liked the Pack because of Favre, just like I cheered for the Saints after Katrina (except against the Bucs) but those days are gone. Go Bucs!!!

John Gruden’s system is not complicated for anyone but him. The coach does all the thinking.  It just sounds complicated. You just have to repeat what he says.  Each player listens to their own assignments. If Rich Gannon can run it, anyone can.

Garcia is a pro-bowl QB ONLY because Favre decided not to go to Hawaii…

If they are really gonna go thru wish this, they at least need to have Brett come to Tampa and spend the day here and make SURE this is waht he wants. All we need is for him to decide to retire again rather than play for the bucs like Jake the Snake did. Have him come down and meet some of the players, talk with the coaches and watch a practice. If he still wants to be a Buc in 24 hrs then go for it.

For the past 3 weeks he didn’t want to come to Tampa….now we’re gonna sign him all spur of the moment?

Garcia is a GREAT QB
Farve is a GREAT QB

Wow,  I can’t believe people are downing Garcia!!!!  He is ONE HELL of a TEAM guy who works his A&& off every play.  I feel we don’t really need Farve but I am not stupid enough to say we couldn’t use him.  I don’t mind him coming here to the Buc’s but It really makes me mad of any Buc fan who thinks Garcia doesn’t play the game as good and hard hearted as any QB has ever played this game.  Philly let a great QB go and the Buc’s sure played some GREAT games under his watch.  I just hope this doesn’t mess with the players heads where this works against our TEAM EFFORT>  GO BUCS

brett favre at 38 is not the answer… no one can deny he had a magical year last year but the 3 years before that he was horrible. Ask anyone who watched the giants game how the packers lost that game at home and two words come to mind Brett Favre…overrated at 38

Also, you all keep pointing out that Garcia only went to the Pro Bowl cause Brett dropped out. You fail to mention that Brett had by far his best year in a decade last year. Do you really think he’ll repeat last year stats again this year? in a new system? with no WRs?

Brett Favre will bring the kind of excitement to Tampa’s offense for the next couple of years, the likes of which has never been seen in franchise history. If he can improve last year’s offense by 15-20% the Super Bowl is a lock with our defense.

Jesse…

G.B.‘s WR corps was NOT good…they were adequate, much like ours.  Favre makes everyone on offense around him better.  He did it with the no-name WR corps in G.B. and he’ll likely do it here too.  There are a lot of reasons that Favre may initially struggle in Tampa, but the WR corps is not one of them.

At this point, our offense is prepared for what he brings to the table.  We’ve got a good o-line, a solid running game, and WR that can both stretch the field and catch the underneath pass.  The offense is suited to his skill-set.  In truth, having Favre on the field will only help the running game b/c nobody would dare put 8 in the box with #4 under center.

Favre to Tampa would be the best addition in years. Get your #4 Jerseys on order.

Mr. Favre welcome to Tampa. Think of how many Superbowl rings you would have if you came here in 1999. As a bonus, we’ll even bring Warren Sapp out of retirement.

I’m on the fence on this one! I have always Liked Brett but this has taken too long and training camp is now in it’s 2nd week. i also love how Garcia put it all on the field for this organization last yr. I feel like we are treating him badly. Farve is a legend and play’s his heart out. Will he here, or is there too much damage? The playbook will be a challenge and Garcia will get us to the playoff’s this year! This deal will either get us to the big game here in town this yr or, sink our ship out in Tampa Bay! One thing for sure it will b a zoo here from tis point on! Cross your fingers! GO BUC’S!!!

I don’t know if this is realevant but Bruce Allen was just seen having breakfast at First Watch with Dan Marino, and the Vikings have just filed a complaint that Fran Tarkenton called Jon Gruden on a Vikings cell phone.

I have been reading most of the comments on how Brett,s days are over.
All I can say is “Let’s have this conversation at the end of the season”.
Brett will get you Bucs fans further into the playoffs and maybe all the way.
Our screwed up management up here evidently does not want a winning season this year. Brett gave us the best chance.
I will now be tuned in to all Bucs games. Enjoy Brett he will do well for you down there. You think you had sold out games before?

Ira - more garbage journalism.  He’s on the verge - give me a break.  Site your source Ira!  Who is your source that told you that Brett was on the verge of signing?  Brett contacted several teams and told them he was up for a trade now that things in GB have gone south.  GB, McCarthy, Thompson - what a bunch of Idiots.  You’d better hope you morons go to the playoffs w/ Rodgers - cause if you don’t; it’s goodbye to you.  If we land Brett - so be it!  He is a strong armed durable QB but he is INT prone and a gunslinger.  The true Tampa fans will support either one at QB!  A big name isn’t always better.  GO BUC’s!

Well, perhaps Farve can make the Buc’s mediocre WRs look good. The guy throws hard so that something thing they will have to adapt to.
