ST. PETERSBURG The heavy workload over the final days of the regular season has taken a toll on Kyle Farnsworth, whose balky right elbow is acting up again.
Manager Joe Maddon said this afternoon that Farnsworth was not available to pitch against the Rangers during the first two games of the ALDS in Texas.
“Yes, I guess you can call it a little bit of a setback, because he was doing well, but then we used him so many days in a row and I think that set him back a little bit,” Maddon said. “He said he was feeling good (Saturday). He said he keeps feeling better. As we continue to move this forward, I’ll just have to be careful with him.”
Farnsworth was shut down on two occasions during the final month of the season because of soreness in his right elbow. He returned on the final homestand and appeared in four of the Rays final five games, including the last three.
This is one reason why Wade Davis has been moved to the bullpen. Maddon said before Saturday’s Game 2 that Davis provides a “security blanket” in case Farnsworth can’t pitch the ninth inning.
When asked today if he would use Davis to close a game, Maddon said, “We may. I don’t know.”
Maddon said he thinks Farnsworth could be available for Monday’s Game 3.
