TORONTO Kyle Farnsworth threw this morning and pronounced him fit for this afternoon’s game with the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.
“Everything felt good,” he said. “I’ll be down there (in the bullpen).”
Farnsworth hasn’t pitched since Tuesday because of tenderness in his right elbow. The injury came to light Saturday when manager Joe Maddon used Joel Peralta in the ninth inning of the Rays 6-5 win against the Jays.
Maddon said he will be careful with how he uses Farnsworth over the remaining 31 games of the season.
“I just got to listen to him,” Maddon said. “He knows himself really well and takes care of himself. Sometimes you just got to give him a break.”
Maddon said he doesn’t think this will be a lingering situation with Farnsworth elbow and that Maddon expects Farnsworth will be available for the remainder of the schedule.
“I would like to believe so,” Maddon said. “Maybe not ride him at all, and probably a four-out save is not in the books. If we take care of him I think he will be fine the rest of the season.”
The four-out save isn’t a possibility in the immediate future and probably not until next season, Maddon said.
“He’s just way too valuable to not play along right now and make sure that he’s well,” Maddon said.
