USF basketball coaches Jose Fernandez and Stan Heath spent a few minutes with the media this afternoon to discuss their teams.
Heath said the MRI on C Jarrid Famous’ right knee on Wednesday didn’t show any major damage and that Famous would practice today and Friday. Famous is expected to play on Saturday against St. John’s after missing the Bulls’ win over Cincinnati on Tuesday due to what is being described as a meniscus strain.
As for Fernandez, he said the Bulls will continue to play with just eight players on the roster for at least the next two games, including Saturday’s showdown with No. 9 West Virginia at the Sun Dome.
Sequoyah Griffin, Janae Stokes and Dominique English remain suspended. The trio has missed the past two games and will sit out at least four according to Fernandez for violation of team rules.
Meanwhile, Fernandez said that two other players missing—forward Porche Grant and guard Jasmine Wynn—will return next season. Grant is sitting out the year due to personal reasons and Wynn suffered knee injury earlier in the season.
Fernandez said Wynn will undergo surgery to repair the knee probably sometime next week.
For more on USF’s basketball teams, check out the blog later and Saturday’s Tampa Tribune.
I’ll also have a baseball season-preview story in Friday’s Tampa Tribune. The Bulls open the 2010 season tomorrow at Florida, not wasting any time in facing strong competition.
